Cat of the Week: Savannah

Julia D Cat of the Week

Savanah had a rough start in life. She spent the first few years raised in a hoarding house, having multiple litters of kittens as well. She was then rescued along with her 5 four-day-old kittens. Savannah was shy and hesitant when she got to her foster home, however, she wouldn’t ever turn down a good head scratch. Her foster mom quickly found out she hadn’t ever experienced things a normal house cat had. She didn’t know what toys were and wasn’t held much. Through time and patience, Savannah has learned and experienced what it’s like to be loved. She has all the toys she can play with. A bunch of windows to sunbathe, watch leaves fall and watch birds flutter around. She has lots of cozy blankets and beds to sleep on. She enjoys being up high, not to hide, but to overlook her castle. Savannah would do best in a home with another friendly cat. She learns a lot from having a role model and gains confidence in having a companion. She loves to play with the younger cats and snuggle with the older cats in her foster home. She enjoys being loved and scratched, she isn’t one to be picked up or lay in your lap (yet). So older children would be recommended.

Savannah’s adoption fee is $85 and includes spay surgery, being up to date on vaccinations and preventives, and a microchip with free lifetime registration.

Happy Tail: Phobos

Julia D Happy Tails

Last Hope rescued Phobos (formerly Scooby) from an abandoned house in northern Iowa. We couldn’t believe someone would leave him behind because he’s been such a great dog from day one!

Cara and Atulya were referred to Last Hope from friends who had adopted from us in the past. They met Phobos and just knew he was the dog for them. They appreciated the adoption process because it told them Last Hope isn’t just interested in helping people adopt a dog, but we want them to adopt the RIGHT dog for them.

Phobos gets along with everyone: dogs, cats, babies, young children, strangers, elderly people, and does great in a crowd. Squirrels? Well, they’re another story!

The adjustment period was pretty smooth. At first, he was a little nervous when they left but after a while he could trust that they would always come back so he accepted being left alone at times. Phobos loves attention. He has a “job” – he visits hospice patients and he loves getting all the attention. He loves visiting friends, walks, and visits to the dog park. Cara and Atulya even have a bike wagon so they can take him along on bike rides. He even has a doggy best friend, Daphne! He is very well-behaved but can get a little stubborn sometimes. He gets along well with their cat, Moon and most of all, he makes his family laugh.

Phobos is known around town as being a very friendly dog and Cara and Atulya like to take him wherever dogs are allowed. They feel grateful that they contacted Last Hope and got matched up with Phobos.

And we’re grateful that they opened their lives and home to Phobos. He really hit the jackpot. Thank you Cara, Atulya, and Moon!

Dog of the Week: Romeo

Julia D Dog of the Week

Hello, my name is Romeo! I am a big boy with a big and adventurous heart! I love to go out to the park and explore the fields and (my all-time favorite), play in the water! I truly believe I was born to swim…I would swim all day if I was allowed to! I love to dive under to get rocks from the bottom of the creeks, and I love playing a good ol’ game of fetch, too! I will retrieve anything you throw into the water! I am looking for a home with no kids or cats, however, I do get along with other dogs and enjoy their company! I would love a family who is very outdoorsy and adventurous just like me, and who has strong dog handling experience. I am a smart boy and I can’t wait to show you everything that I know!

Romeo’s adoption fee is $250 and includes neuter surgery, being up to date on vaccinations and preventives, a microchip with free lifetime registration, and a free obedience class.

If you would love to go on adventures with Romeo, please complete an adoption application HERE.

Cats of the Week: Zelda and Arcadia

Julia D Cat of the Week

Zelda and Arcadia are our Cats of the Week and they are a bonded pair so we want to see them go to a forever home together.

Zelda is a stunning grey tabby who is currently in foster care with Arcadia. She is quite timid and shy, but taking clues from Arcadia during foster care she has warmed up to people quite a bit. Zelda has the most petite meow response when you talk to her and it’s so endearing. Zelda is not a fan of being picked up, but when she starts trusting you will come by for pets and neck scratches and really loves being brushed. She’s very inquisitive and loves crinkle toys. If you give her a window with a bird feeder to watch over, she’s very content. She doesn’t mind seeing dogs in the neighborhood from a window but isn’t too keen on them close up.

Arcadia is a beautiful young lady. Once she gets to know you, she will adore neck scratches and play time. Not a fan of being picked up, she has come to love sitting on her foster’s lap or watching birds and squirrels from any window available. She adores toy mice and chasing the red dot of a laser in the evenings. Like Zelda, she doesn’t mind seeing dogs from a distance but isn’t too keen on them close up.

Their adoption fee includes spay surgery, being up to date on vaccinations and preventives, and a microchip with free lifetime registration.

Dog of the Week: Finn

Julia D Dog of the Week

Large and in charge, meet Finn! This big boy has some serious love to share with the right adopters.  Finn is looking for a home with an experienced dog owner, someone who has a history with big dogs, and a willingness to continue training skills.  Finn does best with small- to medium-sized dogs in a home, he has done doggy daycare and does great with everyone. He also does good with cats, and seems timid with a confident cat. Finn is a gentle giant, but he is best suited to a home with adults only or children that are 10+. His previous owner noted that Finn is stubborn and will push the boundaries that are given – for example, if you tell him to stay down or off from jumping up, he’ll be grumpy but will comply.

Finn’s adoption fee is $250 and includes neuter surgery, being up to date on vaccinations and preventives, a microchip with free lifetime registration, and a free obedience class.

Cat of the Week: Rosemary

Julia D Cat of the Week

Hi, I’m Rosemary! I’m a mom to five bundles of joy, but I have to admit that I’m ready to let my babies fly the nest and find a home for myself. New things frighten me quite a bit. I’d describe myself as a secret admirer. I love cheek scratches and being held, but sometimes I still hiss or run when somebody approaches me. I’ve never scratched or bitten anybody though, so don’t be afraid! I just like to warn people that I am uncomfortable so I can have my space. Want to know the best way to get me to warm up to you? Give me canned food! As soon as I hear the can opening I will most likely begin to rub up against your legs and meow because I get so excited. My foster mom tells me I’m so sweet and have such beautiful fur! I really hope someone will give me a warm home and time to let me adjust, so eventually we can become best friends!

Rosemary’s adoption fee is $100 and includes spay surgery, being up to date on preventives, and a microchip with free lifetime registration.

Cat of the Week: Shay

Julia D Cat of the Week

Shay is a sweet young lady who would love a home of her own. She loves watching birds out the window and basking in the sun. She is ok with other cats as long as they give her a little space. She loves attention and would love a couch to nap on all day long.

Shay’s adoption fee is $85 and includes spay surgery, being up to date on vaccinations and preventives, and a microchip with free lifetime registration.

Happy Tail: Rocky (FKA Porter)

Julia D Happy Tails

When Randy and Sandy adopted Rocky (formerly Porter), they knew they were in for a challenge. They like to adopt pets that are hard to place and give them all the time and attention they need to blossom into great pets. Rocky certainly fit that category.

Rocky had been physically and emotionally abused in his past. But with love and lots of patience, he has become a beloved member of their family. At the time they adopted him they had another rescue dog, Bix, that helped teach Rocky how to be a dog and help convince him that he landed in a pretty great home. But it took a while for Rocky to really settle in and begin to trust people again. Sandy would take him to dog classes and sometimes it would take 20 minutes just to get him through the doorway. And if he wasn’t up for something in class she would just sit with him until he was ready to give it a try.

Rocky has been with them for over seven years and it makes them happy to see him content with life. Sandy tears up when she sees Rocky happy and smiling and just being a goofy dog.

Rocky sure hit the jackpot with Sandy and Randy. They worked with him and loved him unconditionally and it made all the difference in the world. Who knows where Rocky would be now if they hadn’t come along and been willing to adopt a more challenging dog.

Volunteer of the Month: Lynn Kennedy

Julia D Volunteer of the Month

Lynn Kennedy first came to know about Last Hope when the family adopted a rabbit from us. She was a stay-at-home mom at the time and decided to fill her time with volunteer work.

Along with her daughter, Elizabeth (Izzy), she has fostered many cats and kittens with special medical needs, cats that need socialization, and pregnant cats. She also does a few cat care shifts a week at the Adoption Center which entails cleaning litter boxes, cleaning the cat area, laundry, dishes, feeding/watering, administering medication as needed, etc.

Lynn has also taken on the big task of painting the entire inside of the Adoption Center! She also has helped with paperwork, fundraising, home visits, open houses, giving tours of the Center, transporting cats, intakes, bathing, running the kids’ program PAWSitive Adventures, and even bringing pizza to the volunteers working on tough hoarding cases.

Volunteering at Last Hope makes her feel like she’s making a difference. “You can see the look in the animals’ faces – they are appreciative. They want love and I have lots of love to give! You are part of a family at Last Hope,” she says.

As you can see, Lynn is a big part of what goes on at Last Hope and we are so lucky to have a volunteer like her!

Dog of the Week: Beto

Julia D Dog of the Week

We swear this dog is always smiling!  Meet Beto; this young and handsome guy is sure to make you smile, too! Beto is around 2 years old, he has wonderful young dog energy and is seeking a forever home that wants an active and medium-high energy dog companion.  Beto will love a home that is active and takes him out for adventures and walks. Included in Beto’s adoption fee is a free obedience course at Cedar Run Pet Boarding & Daycare, we think he will be a champ in picking up lots of new commands here and this will make for a great bonding experience with his new owner. Beto needs a home with no cats, small dogs, or very young children.  He will be best paired with other dogs that are playful and active like he is, and children that will appreciate a playful large-sized dog!

Beto’s adoption fee is $250 and includes neuter surgery, being up to date on vaccinations and preventives, a microchip with free lifetime registration, and a free obedience class.
