Cat of the Week: Woody

Julia D Cat of the Week

Woody is a laid back boy looking for some cuddles. He’s 4 years old with a handsome brown and white, tabby coat. He enjoys lounging in a cozy bed and may enjoy sunbathing from a purr-fect window seat! He and the other kitties get along well in his room. He may be relaxed but once he hears a can of wet food pop open, he jumps up like an excited kitten! Come meet Woody and see if he’s a match for you!

Woody’s adoption fee is $85 which includes neuter surgery, being up to date on vaccinations, and a microchip. If you’re interested in Woody please complete an application HERE or email adoptions@adopthope.org.

Dogs of the Week: Katy and Alvin

Julia D Dog of the Week

Hi I’m Katy! I moved here from Texas with my friend Alvin. He and I are best friends and would love to find a home together.  When I got here I was very thin and had those bad heartworms.  I gained over 15 lbs and I am all done with my heartworm treatment. Everyone says I am a character! I like treats and to play with toys.  I am dreaming of a home where Alvin and I can chill out and be our silly selves.  If you think you have room for me and Alvin, please come meet us!

Alvin here. I am a pretty laid back guy but I have to bring along my girl Katy.  See we came together to Iowa from Texas with the Harvey dogs.  I had some pretty bad skin infections and heartworms but I am getting better.  She and I are best friends and wanna stay together.  We would like a home with no cats (Katy doesn’t like them) and where we can be the only dogs in the home.

If you’re interested in Katy and Alvin please complete an application HERE or email adoptions@adopthope.org.

Cat of the Week: Summer

She would make a great addition to your family, because she has such a fun and loving personality! Why wouldn’t you want to adopt Summer? She’s an upbeat terrific kitty! She’s waiting to meet you!

Summer’s adoption fee is $85 which includes spay surgery, being up to date on all vaccinations, and a microchip. If you’re interested in Summer, please complete an application HERE or email adoptions@adopthope.org.

Dog of the Week: Shadow

Julia D Dog of the Week

Hi, I’m Shadow!  I am a three year-old lab mix and I’m convinced I’m a lapdog! I love to be with people, but I’m very well behaved in a really big crate.  My foster mom hasn’t left me out when she’s gone yet, but I think she’s going to soon, because I’m a really good boy! I am curious about cats and chase them a little, but I have two in my foster home and we get along pretty well!  I LOVE to play and will “hound” you until  you finally put my toys away or wear me out!  I really like walks and living with someone who is active with me and likes to run/walk would be a really good match for me, but not required as long as you’re willing to play a few times a day! I can jump really high, so a fence is a good idea if you’re going to leave me out in the yard for short periods of time.  I’m a pretty big boy, and I’m not too good at understanding how to play with little people, so kids over the age of 10 are best. Patience is always important with a new four-legged family member; I’m not perfect. My foster mom says the right family would be really lucky to have me because I am such a good boy and I have a lot of love to give!

Shadow’s adoption fee is $250 which includes neuter surgery, being up to date on vaccinations, microchip, and a free obedience class. If you’re interested in Shadow please complete an application HERE or email adoptions@adopthope.org.

Cat of the Week: Luke

Julia D Cat of the Week

Luke has been with LHAR for nearly a year now. He was a frightened kitty when rescued, but now that he has gotten used to being around new people, he’s come out of his shell and this handsome Brown Tabby boy is very personable!!  He has grown quite a bit, and would sure like to have his furrever family find him and take him home! He enjoys being held and cuddled, and he’s a talker, too! He’s probably 2 years old now, so he has a long life ahead of him and we’d love to see him in a loving home instead of being in a temporary foster setup. He will probably get along just fine with other cats if properly introduced, and when at Adoption Events at PetSmart, he doesn’t freak out when dogs go by his cage, so perhaps he spent time with a friendly dog in his past life!  If you love good sized kitties – and especially the Tabby coat – apply to meet this boy today and plan to fall in love!

Luke’s adoption fee is $85 which includes neuter surgery, being up to date on vaccinations, and a microchip. If you’re interested in this cutie please complete an application HERE or email adoptions@adopthope.org.

Dog of the Week: Big Ben

Julia D Dog of the Week

Hi everyone, I’m Big Ben!  I’m around 2 years old and a very active boy. I came all the way from Texas after Hurricane Harvey and I’m excited to be living in the Midwest! When I got to Iowa I did have to go through a mild treatment for heart worm and a surgery on my ACL. I’m good as new now and ready to find my forever family! I’m looking for a family preferably with some big dog experience. My friends at Last Hope guess me to be a mix of Cane Corso and Mastiff. I also need to be the only pet in the house. I’m not too fond of other dogs and cats. A family with children over 12 would be best too as I can be a bit overprotective of my toys.  I need someone that can keep me active with lots of exercise and play time. I’m still young so I’d love a family who will teach me my basic commands and work with me on leash training. I really enjoy walks but since I’m a big guy I do pull a little, but with your help I know I can master it!

Big Ben’s adoption fee is $250 which includes neuter surgery, being up to date on vaccinations, microchip, and a free obedience class. If you’re interested in Big Ben please complete an application HERE or email adoptions@adopthope.org.

Volunteers of the Month for January 2018: Foster Homes

Julia D Volunteer of the Month

Our fosters are very important people! Yes, we have the Adoption Center where we house some animals but foster homes are preferable for the animals. They get to know the animals so we can better find forever homes that will be good matches. While in the foster homes, the fosters learn about the animals’ personalities and quirks and have an opportunity to teach the animals how to live in a home and some basic commands (like “sit” and “down”). They learn how the animal reacts to other animals, kids, strangers, etc. Some animals we take in are a little damaged emotionally and need some extra TLC or perhaps have never lived inside a home before and need to learn some house manners.

Our fosters step up and take in these animals and take on the responsibility of caring for them on a daily basis. But most of all they commit to loving them because love heals a lot. It’s not easy to let them go when they get their forever homes, but the rewards are worth it. They know that they were an important part of saving the animal’s life and they deserve to be loved and adored in a forever home. So we send out a big THANK YOU to all the people who foster for Last Hope. We couldn’t do it without you!

If you’ve ever thought of fostering, here are some reasons why you should seriously consider it:

1. It Provides an Alternative to Shelter Environments. Even the best animal shelters are still shelters which, in general, are very stressful places. They can be noisy, the animals don’t get as much attention, and they are full of strange animals with differing personalities. They are cared for by different people so there isn’t as much continuity as in a home environment. By fostering a pet you help them avoid the kennel that can be very overwhelming for some animals.

2. It Gives the Animal a Chance to Improve. Some animals come to us with issues that likely would not adequately be addressed in a kennel situation. However, when these at-risk animals are rescued and put into foster homes they can be given the training, medical attention, and overall specialized treatment that they need. Thanks to cooperation between the foster, veterinarian, trainer, and whoever else is involved, this combined effort will enable the animal to be rehabilitated and adopted into a forever home successfully!

3. It Literally Saves the Animal’s Life. We can’t take in a homeless animal unless we have a place for them to go. Sometimes we have to turn animals away because we don’t have a foster for them. So when a foster does step up and take in an animal, they are saving that animal’s life. And it’s an amazing feeling to know that.

4. It Provides Terminally Ill Animals with a Peaceful End. Although it is sad, being a “forever foster” for a terminally ill animal is a great way to provide a loving soul with a joyful end to their life. Not all animals are adoptable so some of our fosters step up and take in animals knowing they will be in their home until they pass away. If you foster a terminally ill animal, you are giving it the loving end of its life it deserves, filled with warmth, kindness, and probably lots of spoiling!

5. Fostering Enriches YOUR Life as Well. It is becoming more and more apparent due to scientific studies, personal accounts, and widely shared experiences that animals literally improve your quality of life. Not only are they linked to reducing stress – which has an overall positive effect on the body due to less strain – but they improve anxiety and depression symptoms as well. Many people have reported that their dog, cat, rabbit, or other pet saved them from committing suicide. The companionship itself is healing for anxiety and depression sufferers, as well as the acts of petting, cuddling, and caring for the animal which provide endless emotional benefits. Also, it just makes life more fun in general due to the addition of another cute, spunky personality to your household. You can also have the comfort of knowing that you are doing your part in saving animals’ lives which improves your own self-worth.

If this sounds interesting and if you’re animal savvy, please click HERE to complete a foster application. In particular we have several dogs that need fosters with lots of dog experience.

Happy Tail: Bosco (formerly Harley)

Julia D Happy Tails

On the one year anniversary of Bosco’s adoption, Emily sent us an email telling us about the year Emily and Chris had with their new furbaby. We LOVE getting updates about Last Hope alums! Here is how their year went:

The first few weeks were, to be honest, a little challenging. It took a little bit of time for Bosco to get used to his new home, which happens sometimes when you adopt. During that initial period they figured out that Bosco is a Coonhound mix which shed some light on some of his behaviors like chasing rabbits and squirrels and alerting the whole neighborhood when there’s something in a tree! This prey drive meant they dare not introduce Bosco to their two rabbits but they’ve all lived separate happily.

Emily and Chris took him to obedience classes (which we highly recommend) in which he completed levels one and two and he also went through Agility class (which he loved). He knows the commands sit, down, heel, stay, target, play dead, through (he runs between their legs), shake, high five, get away, jump (through a hula hoop), and his most recent task, roll over. Emily and Chris really did their homework with Bosco to teach him so many tasks. However, one downfall to him learning to jump was that he realized he could jump over their fence. But they replaced it with a five foot privacy fence and that fixed that. They report that Bosco is reactive on a leash – especially nervous around bigger dogs and male dogs – but in his new backyard he gets plenty of exercise.

Like so many new pet parents they began with rules about staying off the furniture. Emily says that was a quaint notion! But by allowing Bosco on the furniture they have realized that he’s super cuddly. And he doesn’t want to sit NEAR them, he wants to sit ON them. They now love the cuddle time with him.

Bosco loves to disembowel stuffed toys! They tried the “tuffy” toys that are more sturdily built and they stumped him for a couple weeks, but then he learned how to chew open the seams and get the stuffing and squeaker out in about 10 minutes. He now only gets stuffies on special occasions.

It sounds like Bosco really hit the jackpot with Emily and Chris! It was a little difficult in the beginning but they took their responsibility seriously and stuck it out until he learned how to live in their house. Sometimes there is that adjustment period that you have to make it through but there are so many rewards on the other side!

Thank you, Emily and Chris for giving Bosco such a good and loving home! And thank you for sharing your first year together with all of us.

Dog of the Week: Jasmine

Julia D Dog of the Week

Hello, I’m Jasmine and I am a Texas girl looking for my new home in Iowa! BTW – still getting used to this Iowa weather. Whew it’s cold!  I would love to snuggle on a warm couch with you! I love people and kids too! I am not so fond of cats though.  I can be a little selective of my doggy friends because I like getting all the attention, but I may like a calmer, submissive doggy friend.  I love treats and getting lots of attention.  And I am the best at giving kisses too!

Jasmine’s adoption fee is $250.00 which includes spay surgery, being up to date on all vaccinations, microchip, and free obedience class. If you’re interested in Jasmine, please complete an application HERE or email adoptions@adopthope.org.

Dog of the Week: Ace

Julia D Dog of the Week

Hi, I’m Ace! I am a 2 yr old very energetic boy! I love my people and want to be with them all the time.  I am house trained too.  I would love an active family that takes me with them and gives me lots of exercise.  I also dream of a fenced yard that I can run and run in! I am just learning some of my commands so if you can take me to classes I can learn even more! I like people of all sizes but I could unintentionally knock over little people because I have a lot of energy. No cats please.

The adoption fee for Ace is $250.00 which includes neuter surgery, being up to date on vaccinations, microchip, and a free obedience class. If you’re interested in Ace please complete an application HERE or email adoptions@adopthope.org.
