Cat of the Week: Gerald

Julia D Cat of the Week

Meet Jerry…If you like feisty kitties, he’s your man! This sweet boy just wants your love and attention.  He is an absolute snuggler and loves to play, especially with the dogs in his foster home.  Jerry is FIV+, but it doesn’t slow him down and he will still have a long and happy life with the proper care but will most likely need to be the only kitty in his new home. He is currently living with Wally – our other FIV+ kitty. If you’re looking for an awesome pair of kitties check these guys out!  With Jerry’s feisty nature we do believe he would do best in a home with no small children.

Dog of the Week: Maggie/Mariah

Julia D Dog of the Week

Hi! I am Maggie!  I’m a sweet girl despite a rough start to my life. I love my humans and give lots of kisses if you let me. I like most people, sometimes you just need to introduce me slowly or have them give me a treat since I LOVE treats. My foster mom is working with me on being more relaxed when I see people out and about. Everyone thinks this is my first time in a home and I’m loving it. I love to be around my family and have my head and belly rubbed. I would do best in a home that is low key, with older kids  and doesn’t have a lot of activity going on.  I’m  very protective of my family and will let you know if a stranger is coming around. I don’t have a lot of energy besides if I see a squirrel or rabbit. Although I get a spurt of energy every now and then but it doesn’t last long. My perfect home is one where I get lots of attention, I’m the only dog, and where there are not different people coming and going just my family.I do great with the two cats in my foster home so if you have cats, I’m fine with that.

Cat of the Week: Bamboo

Julia D Cat of the Week

My name is Bamboo. I am a shy and gentle mature boy. I am a little nervous around new people and new environments. I do enjoy being petted and a good chin rub. I am currently living at the Last Hope Adoption Center and am still getting to know others. I am starting to come around more and am becoming more affectionate. I can be playful as well! I get along good with the other cats in my room. I like to cuddle with them and nap. I have long, nice, cream and white colored hair but I recently got a bath and a hair cut, so my hair is really short right now. It will grow back eventually but it feels good to have a fresh cut and my hair will look even more healthy! I am waiting to go to a forever home or even a foster where I am safe and loved.

If you’re interested in wonderful Bamboo, please complete an application HERE or email adoptions@adopthope.org.

Dog of the Week: Prudence Hope

Julia D Dog of the Week

Hi, my name is Prudence Hope, but you can call me Prue.  I am a very energetic, loving, playful girl who just wants to follow you around everywhere, people have jokingly called me “white shadow.”  I am a well behaved girl, love every person I have ever met, I would like to be the princess of the house but could possibly get along with a very submissive boy dog my size or bigger. I don’t like cats (or small animals) at all.  I am fully house trained, don’t do well in a crate but can be trusted to be out during the work day, I am a little anxious in car rides, know how to sit, lay, and shake, and love to cuddle.  If you are looking for a faithful companion to watch movies with and cuddle in bed with, then I am your girl.   I would do best with kids over 10.

Dog of the Week: Punk

Julia D Dog of the Week

My name is Punk, I am a 3 year old male bully mix. Don’t let my name fool you, I’m as sweet as they come!  I’m a people lover, potty trained and I know “sit” and “down” and I love to play catch. I seem to be okay with cats and just about every other animal I meet. I’m what you call a catch! No kids under 12 please.

Six Reasons Why Senior Pets Rock!

Julia D Article

Most of the time when people are thinking about adding a new pet to their family, they want to get a puppy or kitten. Sadly, there are many older pets in shelters who do not find homes because people are not aware of the advantages of adopting a mature dog or cat. For some reason, these pets are considered “too old” even if they are only five years old! Here are a few reasons why senior pets rock:

  1. Senior Pets Are Usually Already Trained – Although puppies are cute and cuddly, they demand a lot of attention and training which can be frustrating and potentially expensive. Puppies must be housebroken and trained not to chew, jump, and bark all over the place. They don’t know basic commands like sit and stay, and it can be quite chaotic if the training doesn’t really work out as planned. Mature pets on the other hand, often come already house-trained and will know basic commands – sometimes several advanced tricks as well! Older dogs are past their teething stage so they are less likely to chew up your shoes, furniture, and other expensive household items. Puppies are excited and mystified by literally everything and anything, so they often escape to explore the outside world – which could be dangerous and scary! Older dogs have already lived on our planet for a while, which means they are less likely to go out and satisfy their curiosity. Not to mention, now that the dog has a home again, it probably won’t want to leave your side!
  2. Seniors Have More Consistent Personalities – Mature pets tend to have more a more focused attention span, making it easier for them to learn new lessons. Seniors also have more distinct personalities than puppies and kittens, and that personality is going to be pretty consistent. Most humane societies will even do behavior analyses to determine what type of lifestyle will best suit a pet, so when you pick up your new friend from the shelter, you will have a better idea of how they will fit in to your life. Pets’ personalities are often not known until they are mature, and even knowing the personalities of their parents does not guarantee a certain demeanor. When you choose to adopt an older pet, there is a lot more information available to help you make the right decision, so that the pet has a better chance of transitioning smoothly into your home.
  3. Puppies and Kittens Can Be Pretty Expensive – The first year or so of a pet’s life can be particularly expensive when it comes to veterinary costs. Besides possible training costs, micro-chipping, spaying or neutering, and vaccinations are expensive and can add up very quickly! These are all necessary expenses for a pet to make sure they live a happy and safe life, however, many older pets do not require such intense treatment. Usually senior pets from animal shelters come already vaccinated, micro-chipped, and spayed or neutered – this all means less cost for you! Not to mention, senior pets’ adoption fees are drastically lower than younger pets’.
  4. Senior Pets Are More “Chill” and Laid Back – Puppies and kittens take time to adjust to their new home, making for many sleepless nights. To ensure that they are properly “tired out” in order to sleep at night, it takes a lot of playing, walking, and energy of your own! Many people who have adopted mature pets find this to be less of an issue. Because of their age, older pets tend to sleep quite often, and it is a breeze for them to sleep through the night. It is still advised of course to walk your senior dog and play with them as well, because they also have energy – just not as much as a puppy. Additionally, older pets are often able to tolerate being left alone for longer periods of time than puppies and kittens, so you will not have to worry about them as much when you are at work or school. They will probably just nap most of the time when you’re gone, anyway!
  5. Your Rescue Dog Will Become Your BFF Almost Instantly – Many people attest that rescued pets are aware when they have found a forever home. Older pets give just as much love and attention as any puppy or kitten and have a better understanding of obeying the rules of your household. They also seem to look at their new owner as their “savior” of sorts, for rescuing them from the shelter and giving them a second chance at life. This very often results in the pet following the new owner around everywhere they go, and generally forming an extremely strong bond out of sheer gratitude and love. Even if your rescue animal is a bit apprehensive at first, it will warm up to you in no time. Remember that its past owner may have been abusive or neglectful, or it could have been in a scary or chaotic household – so once it realizes that you are a loving, compassionate owner, it will settle right in!
  6. You Will Literally Be Saving a Life – Finally, the sad truth about the pet population is that millions of animals are euthanized annually in our country because they are not adopted. Due to budget constraints, lack of resources/space, and other obstacles, a staggering amount of amazing animals don’t make it out of the shelter alive. There are so many sweet, loving pets in shelters right now who would love to come home with you. Before you fall in love with that puppy or kitten, consider changing a senior pet’s life and showing them that the world is an amazing and beautiful place filled with lovely owners just like you!

Happy Tail: Nicholas

Julia D Happy Tails

Nicholas (formerly Niklaus) was adopted by Kim and Rich and they couldn’t be happier! Here is how he is doing in Kim’s words:

“Thank you so much for facilitating our adoption of Nicholas (we renamed him from Niklaus – it fits him well).
We both love him SO much.   We couldn’t have custom ordered a better kitty.
It’s been about 1 1/2 weeks since he moved in and has really settled in perfectly.  I figured it’d take him a couple weeks to get comfortable and his true self to evolve.  He was perfect to begin with but it just amazingly keeps getting even better. He’s become increasingly active, running and playing and loves his green foam ball.  He runs down the steps when we go to the basement (plus his food and litter box is down there).  I think the exercise is helping him trim down just a smidge.  He was a hint on the chubby side.
The weather has been gorgeous so he gets to spend a lot of time on our screened deck.  And since we have the air off, we can leave our door to the deck open.
Every night is an exciting adventure for us during bedtime.   Nicholas is SO snuggly and cuddly I just can hardly believe it.  This morning I woke up and he crawled up to lie on my chest as usual to snuggle and give kisses – actually he covers my whole torso and then some.  Then he got up, did a 180 degree turn snuggled back down. His back end was absolutely right in my face with his hind legs sprawled and straddling my neck.  Luckily that back end is very fluffy.  I couldn’t stop laughing.”
It sounds like Nicholas found the PURRfect forever home! Thank you, Kim and Rich for letting him into your home and hearts.

Cat of the Week: Cassie

Julia D Cat of the Week

Cassie is a petite, senior girl. She’s currently living at Cedar Run Pet Boarding and Daycare. She’s a sweet girl who enjoys sunning herself in the windows and relaxing in her kitty bed. She does well with the other kitties that come and go. She’s had several Last Hope roommates over the past few months. She would do great with another kitty friend as long as they’re not too much of a bully.

If you’re interested in wonderful Cassie, please complete an application HERE or email adoptions@adopthope.org.

Dog of the Week: Harvey

Julia D Dog of the Week

Hey, Harvey here and I am on the hunt for my forever home! I love my humans and I would love a home that can take me running or jogging cause I seem to have a lot of energy to burn! I am looking for a active family with a fenced yard for me to play in. I will need a proper introduction to other dogs if you already have one.  I don’t like cats so much so it would be best if there weren’t any around.  I am a pretty big strong guy so I may have a little too much energy for small kids. Everyone says I am a handsome guy! You should come meet me so you can see for yourself!

If you’re interested in awesome Harvey, please complete an application HERE or email adoptions@adopthope.org.

September Volunteer of the Month: Aleah Longner

Julia D Volunteer of the Month

Aleah has been a volunteer for Last Hope only since late January of this year, but she hit the ground running and makes many contributions. She came to Last Hope after wanting to volunteer at a rescue and finding us on the internet.

She works one or two cat shifts a week which entails feeding, washing dishes, clean litter boxes, and sweep and clean up the cat room. The cat volunteers are also responsible for giving any necessary medications. Aleah also takes pictures of the new cats and uploads them to their online biographies so everyone can see how cute they are!

She has also volunteered to transport cats to veterinary appointments and helps out at open houses, microchipping events, and at events like Barks & Brew.

In addition to her direct work with the cats, Aleah also puts in hours on the computer because she says even if she can’t physically be at the Adoption Center she can help out from home. She enters the descriptions for the cat biographies that potential adopters see on the website, uploads medical files from veterinary visits, and uses the medical files to update their profiles. Recently she began working on a project to keep track vaccinations so it’s easier to know when they are due for their vaccines. And if all that wasn’t enough, she is learning the adoption process and is excited to get involved in that aspect of Last Hope.

When asked why she likes volunteering for Last Hope she said,

“I am very fond of volunteering for Last Hope because I love their mission to put the needs of animals first.  It’s so nice to be a part of a heroic team of compassionate animal lovers like myself. Helping animals is my passion and I’m thrilled to finally be able to put this passion to good use. I feel like this is very valuable work and worthwhile to take time out of your day to help make a difference in the lives of homeless animals. They need our help and I’m happy to help them out.”

Aleah also adopted a Last Hope kitty a few months ago and she loved giving her a forever home. The cat gained three brothers: Aleah’s other rescue cats!

Thank you, Aleah, for all your hard work with the animals and behind the scenes! We’re a better team because you’re a part of it.
