Cat of the Week: Kacie

Julia D Cat of the Week

Kacie is a gorgeous F5 Savannah. She loves attention and loves to explore. She has a lot of energy to burn and would love a home of her own to explore and claim. She doesn’t care for other kitties and would like to keep her domain all to herself. She loves soft blankets and will spend plenty of time “making biscuits” with them!

Kacie’s adoption fee is $300 and includes spay surgery, being up to date on vaccinations and preventives, and a microchip with free lifetime registration.

Adopters must live within 100 miles of Cedar Rapids and have cat experience. If you’d like to meet this rare beauty, please complete an adoption application HERE.

Dog of the Week: Hank

Julia D Dog of the Week

Mr. Hanky Panky is a sweet little bowling ball of a dog! He’s ready to be your best friend, and definitely doesn’t want to be left home alone too often.  Hank is super food motivated, so training him with new commands will be easy and fun! He already knows sit and is working on his potty training and leash manners. Hank would like a fenced-in yard to explore, he is not a fit with cats or small dogs.  He might be best paired with a female dog around his size (35 – 50 pounds), or as your number one pup! Hank has never been around babies or toddlers, older children (6+ years old) are the best fit for him. Hank himself is around 2 years old, and has great young dog energy!

Hank’s adoption fee is $250 and includes neuter surgery, being up to date on vaccinations and preventives, a microchip with free lifetime registration, and a free obedience class.

If this hunk strikes your fancy and you’d like to meet him, please complete an adoption application HERE.

Volunteer of the Month: Rachel Palmer

Julia D Volunteer of the Month

Rachel Palmer has been volunteering with the dogs since last fall. She and her wife had lost two dogs in 2020 and were online looking for a new family member. They came across Last Hope on PetFinder and put in an application.  On the day they were supposed to meet a potential adoptee, the derecho hit. So the meet and greet was put on hold until Rachel’s power came back on and they were able to get their fence fixed. They finally got to meet Beto and decided he was the right dog for them.

Rachel works with the dogs at the Adoption Center (cleaning kennels, giving food and water, administering medication, socializing them, etc.). She and her wife also foster dogs in their home. Lately, her schedule has not permitted her to go to the Center in the mornings so she takes time in the early afternoon to walk at least one dog.

Rachel says, “I like volunteering at Last Hope because it’s literally the end of the road for some of these dogs. They wouldn’t be alive if it wasn’t for Sonia and Last Hope. And there are some great dogs there.”

Thank you, Rachel, for all you and your family does for the dogs of Last Hope!

Dog of the Week: Sarge BC

Julia D Dog of the Week

Sarge is a high-energy, very smart (and handsome!) border collie! He knows many basic commands and is an eager learner and a great walking partner.  Sarge is seeking an experienced dog owner; he does have barrier reactivity and although he is working with a trainer on this, he will need an owner that is committed to continuing this work and keeping him safe and well socialized.  Sarge is not a fit in a home with children or cats.  Sarge does great with other dogs, and loves doggy daycare!  Included in Sarge’s adoption fee are training lessons through Cedar Run Company in Hiawatha. For this reason, we would like to find an adopter within approximately 50 miles who is open to working with a trainer using positive reinforcement training.

Sarge’s adoption fee is $250 and includes neuter surgery, being up to date on vaccinations and preventives, a microchip with free lifetime registration, and a free obedience class.

If you’re experienced with dogs and would like to meet Sarge BC, please complete an adoption application HERE.

Happy Tail: Bear (FKA Francesca)

Julia D Happy Tails

Emma found Bear (fka Francesca) on the Last Hope website and was interested because she reminded her of her childhood cat whom she adored. She completed an application and says she appreciated the adoption process. Emma liked that we did our best to make sure Bear was going to the right home by checking references and doing a home visit. She and her partner, Nick, set up an appointment to meet Bear and were pleased by her sweet and friendly demeanor. Nick and Emma decided Bear was the right cat for them.

The adjustment period was smooth. She immediately made herself at home in their condo, going from room to room to check out her new domain. The first few nights she was up late, playing and sometimes “talking.” But she slowly adapted to their sleep schedule and now she reports to her spot next to their bed each night and wakes up with them in the morning.

Bear loves their floor-length windows and all the cat-friendly surfaces in her forever home. She soaks up all the love and attention she can get and is great with any visitors to their home, including children. Bear loves chasing her yarn balls, watching the birds out the window, going to the “salon” (aka getting brushed), napping, and would sell her soul for a tuna-flavored treat!

We are so happy that Bear and her new family found each other because it’s clear she was meant to live with Emma and Nick. Happy life, Bear!

Dog of the Week: Russell

Julia D Dog of the Week

Man of mystery, Russell is definitely a unique combination of breeds! Our best guess is that he has some border collie or cattle dog mixed with something like Chow Chow to give him the distinct body shape that he has! He has long, thick hair, and a sturdy body that is long and low to the ground.  One thing we can say for certain, he is handsome and friendly with people!   Russell can be dog selective, he might be a fit with a medium-sized friendly female dog. He joined us with another male dog that might have been a littermate of his, similar in size and personality these two have gotten along well with supervision.  He is great with people but has never been around very small children, so 6+ years old would be best for him.  Russell needs to learn some basic commands and manners.  He is not a fan of bicycles, and he does bark when he sees other dogs that get him excited (mostly larger males so far). He is about two years old.

Russell’s adoption fee is $250 and includes neuter surgery, being up to date on vaccinations and preventives, a microchip with free lifetime registration, and a free obedience class.
