Dog of the Week: Sassy

Julia D Dog of the Week

Hi! My name is Sassy, but my friends call me Sarsaparilla and Sassafras! I am a medium sized Mastiff mix with a giant-sized personality! My favorite thing in this world is people! I love them all big and small. I get so excited when I meet them my whole body wiggles to show off my excitement. I have lived with kids before and am quite fond of them. They can lie on me and pet me all they want and I will just smile with delight at the attention. I am still learning all of my words. When grown up people tell me to sit, I sit on their lap. I love to be close to them! I really like food too so you could use that to teach me lots of things. I like to please people so it won’t take me long to learn anything you want to teach me. I am already house trained and I like a crate so I will go in there and wait for you to come back if you have to go to work. I am happy to sleep quietly at the end of a bed all night or I will go in a crate. I have lived with other dogs and cats before. I get along with most other dogs as long as you introduce me properly.

Sassy’s adoption fee is $250 which includes spay surgery, being up to date on vaccinations, a microchip with free lifetime registration, and a free obedience class.

Dog of the Week: Lucy

Julia D Dog of the Week

Beautiful and refined is the best way to describe this living doll. Lucy is just one big smiling face waiting to give you a lick hello. Lucy loves to be active, so if you are looking for a jogging companion or someone to take long walks with, then Lucy is your girl and she walks very well on a leash. Lucy gets along well with everyone including respectful children. She enjoys learning and responds well to training. She loves to please her people! Lucy is looking to be the top dog in a one-dog home. No cats either, please! Lucy would love an adventurous life with you! Everything from walks to car rides or just cuddling on a rainy day.

Lucy’s adoption fee is $250 which includes spay surgery, being up to date on vaccinations, a microchip with lifetime registration, and a free obedience class.

If you would like to give Lucy a forever family, please complete an application HERE or email adoptions@adopthope.org.

Cat of the Week: Bahama Mama

Julia D Cat of the Week

Bahama Mama has been a great mom to her babies, and they love snuggling close and being with her!  She had originally been outside with her kittens, and then someone took her and the babies inside… let’s just say they would have fared better if they would have been left outside!  She was terrified when finally rescued, although we are sure she was probably someone’s pet at one time because she is not feral.  With lots of love and affection from her foster family, she is learning to trust and enjoys laying on their laps and their companionship!   Bahama Mama is a beautiful Torbie and white female.

Bahama Mama’s adoption fee is $85 which includes spay surgery, being up to date on vaccinations, and a microchip with free lifetime registration.

If you’re interested in this beauty, please complete an application HERE or email adoptions@adopthope.org.

Dog of the Week: Carew

Julia D Dog of the Week

Carew is just about as cute as they come! She is a young female, playful and super loving with people. If you look closely, you’ll notice that’s Carew just loves to smile! Carew is looking for a forever home with no cats or small dogs, please! She may enjoy living with another medium to large calmer dog, but will need an introduction to see if it would be a fit of course! Carew loves to play with toys, so a nice big fenced in yard with someone who would enjoy playing fetch would be heaven for her!

Carew’s adoption fee is $250 which includes spay surgery, being up to date on vaccinations, a microchip with free lifetime registration, and a free obedience class.

Cats of the Week: Max and Oliver

Julia D Cat of the Week

Max is a sweet boy who is super gentle and loves affection, especially belly rubs.  He is still a young kitty and likes toys and enjoys playing and hanging out with his brother Oliver.  His favorite past time is watching birdies and basking in an open window.

Oliver is a happy-go-lucky boy who loves everything.  He gives awesome hugs and likes to snuggle, but also absolutely loves his brother Max.  He is one of those cats that just makes you happy to be around and will make you fall in love with him in an instant.  He is very talkative and for him, everything is a toy.

We would love to find a home where Oliver and Max could stay together and believe they would do best in a home without other kitties.

If you would like to give Max and Oliver a forever home, please complete an application HERE or email adoptions@adopthope.org.

Dog of the Week: Damon

Julia D Dog of the Week

Meet Damon. He is an 11 year old Husky looking for his forever home. Don’t let his age fool you…..he still acts like a young pup a lot of the time. Other than some joint sensitivity, he is in great health and loves to go for walks. He can also be a big couch potato if that’s what you choose to do for the day.  Damon knows sit, lay down, shake and can even give high fives. His best talent though is his singing. Have you ever heard a Husky sing? It’s entertaining and will make you smile. Damon does great with people but will need to be the only dog. We are looking for a dog-savvy person that is familiar with his breed and will have time to spend with him. Damon is not destructive and can be left loose when his people are gone. He might sleep with you if he decides that he needs to cuddle. To keep Damon looking so handsome, he will need regular grooming.

Damon’s adoption fee is $200 which includes neuter surgery, being up to date on vaccinations, a microchip with free lifetime registration, and a free obedience class.

If you’re interested in this handsome guy, please complete an application HERE or email adoptions@adopthope.org.

Dog of the Week: Nino

Julia D Dog of the Week

Look into my eyes and you will know…I am the good boy for you, my heart is pure as gold and I have so much love to give! I have loved all the people I have met here at Last Hope, they have been so nice and have made me feel so much better. I have stories I could tell but I’d rather not look back, forward is the way I want to go, right into your heart and home! I have been going on lots of walks lately, getting big and strong. I know sit and down and I am really treat motivated, but don’t worry I will take them politely. I have met a lot of people, young and old, and I have liked them all, but maybe not someone too small. I wouldn’t want to knock them over. I wouldn’t mean to but with my size and four left feet… better to be safe, I wouldn’t want to be sorry. I’m indecisive about a doggy friend, maybe someone my size and mellow, I could hang with that. But cats… what’s their deal anyway?! I’d rather just not share a home with them! I can’t wait to hang with you though, we can chill on the couch or go out on the town. I’m easy-going like that!

Nino’s adoption fee is $250 which includes neuter surgery, being up to date on vaccinations, a microchip with lifetime registration, and a free obedience class.

If you’re interested in this great guy, please complete an application HERE or email adoptions@adopthope.org.

Cat of the Week: Thelma

Julia D Cat of the Week

Hey there, they call me Thelma or to some, I’m known as Thelma Lou. I was rescued from a frightful hoarding situation from a home with nearly 40 other cats. The nice volunteers of Last Hope have been taking care of me for the past year. For a while, all I wanted to do was hide. I was very scared of people and couldn’t bring myself to trust them. One thing for sure, I have felt comfortable hiding with other shy kitties and even enjoy a cuddle or snooze. In time, I started to enjoy pets to the head and rubs to my tummy. I even started to purr too! I became curious of people and felt a little more comfortable to not be in hiding as much of the time. I enjoy coming out to greet volunteers at feeding time now. I often like to stand on a perch and have a nice look around. I still enjoy my hiding and there’s work to be done but I’ve already come along ways. Even if I’m hiding, don’t be fooled, I still would love you to graciously greet me! I’m a sweet and very shy mature girl, looking for my second chance. I don’t ask for a whole lot. I would enjoy a quiet home with someone who will have the patience and love I need but also, perhaps, someone who can help me grow too. I would also enjoy another furry friend to cuddle with as it may help me transition better in my forever home. I may come across as I don’t want to be social, but it’s just not true. It means a lot to me when someone notices me!

If you’re interested in gorgeous Thelma, please complete an application HERE or email adoptions@adopthope.org.

Happy Tail: Zip

Julia D Happy Tails

Nancy and Sherrie had a dog named Otis and they lost him in March. Missing him, one day Nancy was looking online and found Zip at Last Hope. It seemed like fate because Zip had the same kind of coloring as Otis so Nancy filled out an application. There were other coincidences that convinced Nancy that Zip was the dog for their family: Otis was seven-years-old and Zip is also seven,  Zip was the seventh dog out of 45 on the list, and Otis used to be her nephew’s dog and his birthday was May 7th. It was lucky seven all over the place!

When Zip first came to live with them he was a little cautious and shy and he actually ended up sleeping in the shower the first night.  They set up a little bed in there and let him hang out in the shower until he got more comfortable. The second day, Nancy spent a lot of time with him, just to get him used to her, she didn’t push him but the time spent with him and their existing dog and cats meant he warmed up to them by the end of the day.

It didn’t take Zip long to adjust but he does get anxious when they leave so they trained him to be in the kennel when they leave and he seems to have adjusted to that well.

They love his energy and complete devotion to them. He listens very well and comes when he’s called, which they love! Zip loves to go on walks at Rockford Prairie Park where he can be off-leash and run freely.

Nancy says, “I have often said that people don’t choose pets, pets choose you.  I believe that Otis and my nephew knew how to mend the hole in my heart and brought Zip into my life.  He came just at the right time – not too soon after Otis’ death and not too late.  I know I will have a broken heart again when Zip leaves, but it is always worth it.”

Thank you, Nancy and Sherrie, for opening your hearts and home to Zip!

Honorary Volunteers of the Month: Barks & Brew Sponsors

Julia D Barks and Brew

Thank you to the generous support of our sponsors, local supporters and attendees, we had a wildly successful 2018 Barks & Brew and raised just over $22,000!  This year’s event featured live music from Bryce Janey and Vandello, and our emcee Bob James from 98.1 KHAK kept the party rocking all day long!  We had amazing donations to our silent auction including free cupcakes for a year from That One Cupcake Place in Hiawatha, certificates for Iowa Goat Yoga, a hot air balloon ride from Buzzards Glory, a Last Hope custom-made yard Jenga set, and not one, but two NFL donations, including an autographed football from the entire 2017 Green Bay Packers team and a signed football from the Minnesota Vikings. Through our continued partnership with NewBo City Market we had a great lineup of breweries and wineries in attendance this year, and actually sold out of tasting cups and growlers midway through our event! For getting the word out, thank you to Lamar Advertising for donating billboard advertising. A special thank you to Bailing Out Benji and K9Cola for joining us at Barks & Brew this year. We would also like to thank Eco Lips for donating hundreds of lip balms to hand out to our attendees this year as well.
