Dog of the Week: Scruffy

Julia D Dog of the Week

Scruffy is, without a doubt, one of the cutest dogs you will ever meet. And when he is at his best, he is happy, sweet, and loving. When he feels safe, he is a bedhog, an enthusiastic walking partner, and a couch-cuddling TV buddy. When Scruffy feels secure, he is the dog of your dreams. He’s a goofball, a sock stealer, a lover. But his life was hard before he moved to Iowa. He lived on the streets in Texas, and in order to protect himself Scruffy learned to stay far away from strangers and growl and bark. He learned to not feel safe. So what does that mean? It means that it takes him a long time to warm up to people. He’s not always comfortable being approached by people he doesn’t know. He does warm up eventually and becomes a lover. But it can take time, especially with men. Scruffy is not a good fit for young children. He is still self-protective and quick movements frighten him. He does well with submissive dogs and a calm introduction. He is good with cats. Scruffy is about 2 years old, neutered, and up to date on shots. He has completed heartworm treatment and needs year-round heartworm preventive. This dog will require a little patience. And training to help him meet people and work on barking. And forgiveness. But folks – this boy is worth it. He is a light in the darkness, and proof that, with love and kindness, a bad past can be overcome. And when he is happy, he is irresistible! Please – do you have room in your heart for Scruffy?

Scruffy’s adoption fee is $250 and includes neuter surgery, being up to date on vaccinations and preventives, a microchip with free lifetime registration, and a free obedience class.
