July Volunteer of the Month: Christina Weiske
Christina first learned about Last Hope at a Dock Dogs event and began volunteering about two years ago. She started off working with the dogs at the Adoption Center and then took in a foster dog, Alvin. She took him to adoption events and met many lovely families who were interested in Alvin but she eventually realized she couldn’t live without that sweet little goofball and adopted him for Christmas! After Alvin, she fostered other dogs but he wasn’t so fond of having different dogs coming and going so she stopped fostering at that point. Christina continued to work with the dogs at the Adoption Center and helping at events. In February, she became a foster lead and has several foster homes she supervises in the Iowa City area and helps with processing adoptions for them. Recently she was asked to be an Adoption Center Lead so she now helps train and supervise volunteers at the Center.
When asked why she likes volunteering at Last Hope Christina said, “I love having the opportunity to meet and help all the dogs. Getting to help take care of them gives me the chance to watch them open up and show off their personalities in a loving environment. It’s so rewarding when you get to see the dogs go into loving homes, and also to see how happy they make their new families. I’ve met a lot of people volunteering at Last Hope who are great advocates for the animals and who are good friends. They have taught me skills that make me a better dog owner myself.”
She also feels that, “it’s all of the dedicated volunteers who make Last Hope such a great organization. Every single one is valuable and important, and I’m proud to know them all.”
And we’re proud to know YOU, Christina! Thank you for all you do for the animals and fellow volunteers.
