Happy Tail: Skye

Mary Beth and Steve had lost their beloved Australian shepherd and were ready to bring another dog into their home. They found Skye, another Aussie, at Last Hope. They live in Ames, so they first checked to see if we would consider an adoption outside Cedar Rapids (we do, depending on the dog and the distance). After completing an application, they heard from LHAR that they were approved to adopt, so Skye came home with them.

The first couple of weeks, Skye was trying to adjust to her new environment, so she did make some messes in the house. Mary Beth and Steve began crating her at night, and when they left. After a few weeks, they tried leaving her out of the crate while they made a short trip to the store. When they got back, there were no messes, and Skye has had free roam of the house ever since.

She likes to be around her humans and will go looking for them if they’re not in the same room (even in the bathroom!). She is happiest when her humans can be home with her and laugh at her antics. She enjoys walks, car rides, running free in her backyard and barking at other dogs, playing catch with a Frisbee, and lying on the vents in the summer to keep cool. And let’s not forget treats! She knows the word and that she needs to shake or lay down to get one.

In warmer weather, Skye loves riding shotgun in their Jeep (she wears a seatbelt to keep her in) and greeting other drivers and pedestrians. She gets smiles and waves from people, and that makes her happy and puts an extra strut in her “wiggle butt” when she walks. Mary Beth and Steve are proud of their “child” when people tell them how pretty she is.

After a couple of slightly bumpy weeks, Skye settled in and is now the queen of the castle who provides plenty of joy and amusement.
