April Happy Tail: Chewy and Meelah

At first, Rick and Amy were looking for a dog – preferably a daschund. They saw Chewy and completed an adoption application. They live a fair distance away so we did a video walkthrough of their home and then they came to meet her. They fell in love with Chewy.

Along the way, they thought it might be good for Chewy to have a companion. That’s where Meelah, the cat, came into the picture. So their family grew and they took both of them home the same day.

The plan to give Chewy a companion didn’t exactly pan out as they had hoped but Chewy and Meelah co-existed well. Chewy was interested in a closer relationship with her but Meelah was hesitant. Chewy loved car rides and even accompanied them to Washington state and loved every minute of it.

Then, Chewy was diagnosed with breast cancer. Rick and Amy were heartbroken when they lost her and still miss her terribly.

After Chewy was gone, Meelah started to blossom as the princess of the house. She has become more affectionate and likes to sleep with them. She also follows them from room to room.

It took her about a year to really get comfortable in her new home. There was some hissing and definitely no cuddles. She was nervous and cautious for a while. But now she is affectionate and gives lots of gentle head butts to remind them she needs some petting and head scratching.

Rick and Amy are pleased that Meelah has settled in so well, but they joke that she has lost all her street cred! She loves food and sleeping in the sunshine. She isn’t much for toys but does like her scratching posts. Her favorite thing to do is sit with Rick in the recliner, which she will happily do for hours.

As empty nesters, their furbabies are very important to them, and they are treated like queens. Chewy will always be in their hearts and they still miss her.

We are thankful Chewy had such a wonderful home in her last years and glad Meelah is showered with love.
