Maggie’s Second Chance

Julia D Urgent Medical Attention Needed

Maggie

Maggie's ShirtMaggie is the sweetest girl despite the hard life she has lead.  Maggie came to Last Hope Animal Rescue from Texas. After having her medical checkup, it was evident that she had been abused.  X-rays showed pellets in two different locations in her body.  Her dental issues were absolutely massive requiring a three and a half hour surgery.  She has a poorly healed fracture which will require surgery to re-align her knee in conjunction with her hip.  At the time of this surgery, her ruptured cruciate ligament will also be repaired.  Thanks to Critter Crusaders Maggie will get a chance to live the life she should have always had.

Critter Crusaders is a non-profit organization founded to give homeless animals a second chance and restore their broken lives.  Critter Crusaders provides and guides medical care for shelter and rescue animals, getting them healthy and ready to find their forever homes.

Please help the dog volunteers at Last Hope Animal Rescue assist Critter Crusaders in getting Maggie the medical care that she needs.  All proceeds from the t-shirt and sweatshirt sales will go to Critter Crusaders for Maggie’s medical expenses.  If you would like to help Maggie but you don’t want to purchase a shirt, you can donate any amount you would like through this website. Visit the website HERE.

The Last Hope Animal Rescue dog volunteers and Critter Crusaders thank you, but most of all Maggie says “Woof” which translates to a BIG THANK YOU!!

Cat of the Week: Baby Girl

Julia D Cat of the Week

Baby Girl

Hi, my name is Baby Girl. You could also call me a princess or a diva. I like to be noticed and spoiled. In return for your attention I will give you lots of love and affection. If you want an interactive kitty I am the one for you! I am black and white with beautiful green eyes. I watch my figure well and stay slim and slender. I am only 3 years old so I am still very youthful, but not a messy baby kitten anymore. I like to talk a lot. I currently live with other cats at the Adoption Center and get along with them alright, but I really would like to be the only cat in your home so I can have you all to myself.

Dog of the Week: Clover

Julia D Dog of the Week

Clover

Hi I am Clover! I am a Husky/Lab mix. I have beautiful ice blue eyes that will melt your heart. I’m an energetic gal so I would really like to have an active FUREVER home!  I love running and jumping in mid air to catch a treat. Tennis balls are my all time favorite toy! I really need a fenced yard so I can run and run!  I love stuffed toys but tear them apart quickly because they give me a little attitude when I start chewing on them. 😉 I’m a really good girl and prefer to have my humans to all to myself.  I’m not too fond of cats because they shed. 😉 and other dogs, well they tend to steal the spot light so that upsets me.  I love the water and playing in the kiddie pool! I’ll let you paint my toe nails and rub my belly all the time.  I am a smart girl and can’t wait to meet my forever people!

If you’re interested in Clover, please complete an application HERE or email adoptions@adopthope.org.

Artemis

Artemis is a confident, older girl who still has some spunk and some love to share. She loves people and loves to get attention from her foster mom and the occasional play session, in between naps of course. Artemis and her sister Cassie were surrendered to a shelter in Eastern Iowa last year before making their way to Last Hope. Artemis would love to find a new forever home of her own with a family to love! She does great with kids and after a little time to warm up has done well with other cats.

My Life with Rescued Dogs

By Natalie Martin 4th grade

My story begins on February 8, 2014 when my family and I met a sick, emaciated, German Shorthaired Pointer named Beanie. Our German Shorthaired Pointer, Major, had passed away in January and our veterinarian, Dr. Hankner, had asked us if we could foster Beanie. He was at the Cedar Rapids Animal Control Center.

We picked up Beanie and brought him home. My mom set up a schedule to take him outside every two hours and feed him 1/2 cup of food for the first two days. Then she increased his food to 3/4 cup every two hours for the third and fourth days. When he finally got to a good weight, he was eating three times per day. We changed his name to Bennie because it was a nicer name. He was such a good dog that we decided to adopt him.

My mom decided that Bennie needed a playmate so we looked at another rescue dog named Violet. She was a Treeing Walker Coonhound. We set up a time for Bennie to meet her. They got along well, so we adopted Violet in June and changed her name to Maggie. Bennie and Maggie had a lot of fun running and playing in the backyard.

In July we decided to foster a Foxhound named Hailey. She was so scared she would growl at Bennie from inside her kennel. My mom had to give Hailey special attention and a lot of love so she would stop being afraid. Bennie and Hailey became buddies chasing each other around the backyard.

In December, Hailey went to a retired couple’s home for a trial visit to see if she would fit into their family. The first two weeks were great but during the third week she started to get depressed. She missed sleeping by people and playing with Bennie. Hailey was returned to us and we adopted her because no one else knew exactly how to care for her.

While Hailey was on her trial visit, we got two other foster dogs. Their names were Bingo, a Bluetick Coonhound and Spencer, a American Staffordshire mix. Before Bingo went to his first adoption fair, my dad decided to adopt him.

When Spencer went to his first adoption fair, he was so stressed that my mom decided not to take him to any more adoption fairs. Mom put Spencer’s information and picture on the Last Hope Animal Rescue’s website and she received several emails from people who were interested in him. A man named Bill, who is a Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) competitor, adopted Spencer and changed his name to Titan. Titan goes everywhere with Bill and he’s the mascot for the gym where Bill coaches.

In March, 2015, we began fostering a Husky mix dog named Fuzz. Fuzz had surgery on his left front leg which was deformed at birth. He had to stay confined to his kennel for two months except for a five minute walk three times per day. His leg healed, and in December Fuzz was adopted by a family who had a six year old female Husky named Emma.

We fostered a smaller Great Dane mix dog named Aubrey for 5 weeks. She was adopted by a family that had a 1 1/2 year old Great Dane boy named Beau. On the day that Aubrey went to her forever home, we got another foster named Brownie. Brownie had Stage 4 heartworms which means she had heartworms in her pulmonary artery. She had three shots in two months to kill the adult heartworms. She had to stay completely confined to her kennel for three months. Now she can go on one mile walks three times each day. Brownie will get a checkup in June to see if all the adult heartworms were killed. When Brownie is ready to be adopted, her forever family will have to be willing to take care of a special needs dog.

Our newest foster is Abe, a little American Eskimo mix dog. He has a genetic disorder that affects every joint in his body. Abe’s hips and knees pop in and out of place. He had surgery on his left hip and knee to stop them from popping in and out. Abe has to have water therapy by walking on a treadmill in the water. In three months when his left leg is healed, he will have surgery on his right hip and knee. He will be ready for adoption by the end of the year.

My life with rescued dogs can be hard but it is also interesting, exciting and it makes me happy.

Beau

Hi, my name is Beau. I’m a Shih Tzu and Poodle mix. I love to play and I get along with other dogs and cats. I was born blind but give me a couple days and I will know the layout of your home and you won’t even know I’m blind. Since I can’t see, I’m protective around my food and bones because of this I should not be around young children. Maybe you have room in your heart and home for me!

If you’re interested in Beau, please complete an application HERE or email adoptions@adopthope.org.

Cat of the Week: Snowflake

Snowflake

This boy is the definition of cool cat! He wants nothing more than to lounge around and get a little love now and then. This boy is pretty much unbreakable – he’s not phased by the other animals in his foster home or the little kids. He’s happy to lay in the window and watch the world go by while he takes in a little sun.  If you’re looking for a cool cat to balance out a busy life – he’s your boy! Or if you’re a cool cat looking for your soul mate – he may just be the one!
