Volunteer of the Month: Laura Bryant

Julia D Volunteer of the Month

Laura started volunteering for Last Hope in 2011 when her dog was at Cedar Run for doggy daycare and Sonia asked Laura if she wanted to help out at Last Hope. She began by creating flyers and fostering “just over the holidays.” Famous last words! Laura has fostered 23 animals so far, ranging from all sizes of dogs to a chinchilla! She’s helped with flyers, adoption events, she currently handles the deposits every Friday and does matchmaking making sure that the animals are matched with perfect forever homes.

She loves helping the animals and making a difference in their lives. A lot of the adopters text her with pictures and updates and she loves that!

“My passion for saving and helping animals is part of who I am. In Last Hope I’ve found a bunch of like-minded people who are all doing their best to make a difference in the lives of animals. Being able to take action and make a difference is extremely important to me, and Last Hope has given me a perfect outlet. Even when it’s hard, and confusing, and disorganized, I’m still proud of our group and our rescue efforts. Rescue is often difficult, rarely convenient, seldom comfortable, and always worth it!”

Thank you, Laura, for all you do for the animals!

Dog of the Week: Kelby

Julia D Dog of the Week

Hi I am Kelby! I am in search of my forever home! I am a little shy at first when I meet new people but I warm up quickly.  I would like to have another confident dog in my new home to help me feel secure. I have not been around cats yet. I am still learning lots of new things like walking on a leash and “sit.”  But I am sure you can teach me lots more!

If you’re interested in learning more about Kelby, please complete an application HERE or email adoptions@adopthope.org.

Happy Tail: Sammie

Julia D Happy Tails

Sammie’s story has a rough beginning but then he came to Last Hope and things took a turn for the better! We rescued him from a hoarding situation where he was struggling with Cerebellar Hypoplasia, a condition that makes him very wobbly. But Last Hope came to his rescue and through the dedication of volunteers, and a special Facebook page, we were able to find him a wonderful forever home!

Sammie is a very special two-year-old boy. His life hasn’t been easy up to this point and came to Last Hope with a very sad story as he came to us from a hoarding situation and was very underweight. However, he is as smart as a whip and knows how to get his way. His favorite thing is to curl on a lap and knead his toes and purr up a storm.

Sammie is a special needs cat. While he has not officially been diagnosed by a vet, we are 99% sure that he has Cerebellar Hypoplasia. It is something he was born with when his mother contracted Panleukopenia (feline distemper) while she was pregnant. Our research shows that CH is not contagious, he is not a carrier, and cats with CH are not in pain and are capable of a full and happy life. CH cats should not be allowed outside as there are too many dangers and they are too uncoordinated to protect themselves. Experts say they should also not be declawed and they do better on a carpeted or rug surfaces as opposed to wood or linoleum. CH cats do not have coordination in their legs so they stumble and fall a lot. If you want to learn more about CH cats go to http://chcat.org/about-ch-cats

As a result, Sammie needed someone committed and dedicated to accommodating his needs. When eating, CH cats have a tendency to stand up; so we have built him a food stand that brings his food up 6” higher. This simple accommodation has helped him put on some weight, but he needs to put on a bit more. He loves both wet and dry food, but dry is harder for him to eat because it slides around so much in the bowl. Wetting it a bit does help. When eating, Sammie makes a woodpecker bobbing motion, so it is important the he has soft silicon bowls to eat and drink from so that he won’t break any more of his teeth. He also needs a home where he cannot gain access to stairs, as he could be seriously injured falling down stairs.

After a little bit of time, we found Sammie a great home with Jill! He is doing great in his new home, has gained some weight, and gets along with his doggy and kitty siblings. There is even another cat in the home with CH. Thank you, Jill, for opening your heart and home to this special guy and loving him just as much as we do! Happy life, little guy!

Cat of the Week: Armani

Julia D Cat of the Week

Armani is a bit shy and a more reserved kitty.  He will need to time to get adjusted to his forever home, especially if your home is full of lots of activity and loud noises.  He’s more mellow and would prefer to be snuggled up in his bed or perhaps on your lap.  He does still enjoy play time and interacting with his humans and loves the string toys.

If you’re interested in Armani, please complete an application HERE or email adoptions@adopthope.org.

Dog of the Week: Dustie

Julia D Dog of the Week

My name is Dustie, I’m a 2 year old female black lab looking for my fur-ever home!  I like kids, cats and people and would LOVE a backyard of my very own to run around in and explore.  I am only a fit if you think you can handle some serious dog kisses, and playing fetch and going for walks! A little about my past… A nice lady found me in a junk yard and showed me that there are nice people out there, she named me Dustie because I was covered in dust from all my time spent outside. I’m not a fan of every dog that I meet, so it’s probably best that I find a family I can have all to myself, I promise I have plenty of love and affection to share with your whole family! It would be best if the kids in the family were over 10 because I am told I play a little too rough with small kids.

If you’re interested in Dustie, please complete an application HERE or email adoptions@adopthope.org.

Cat of the Week: Godiva

Julia D Cat of the Week

Godiva is gorgeous and she knows it! She can be a bit of a Diva and loves attention! Her meow is the loudest of the group and isn’t afraid to use it to get your attention.  She’s the first to jump on your lap or rub up against your legs.  She’s a bit timid around children under 10 and loud noises and would need some time to adjust.

If you’re interested in Godiva, please complete an application HERE or email adoptions@adopthope.org.

Dog of the Week: Toby

Julia D Dog of the Week

Toby is a senior male Australian Cattle Dog/Heeler mix looking for his forever family! He gets along well with other dogs and loves a good scratch on the behind from older children!  Toby loves going to doggy daycare, he would make a great companion for nightly walks around the block and he doesn’t mind sharing his home with a cat. If you are looking for a senior dog with lots of love to give and years of life to share, Toby is your man! This old dog already knows a few great tricks, too – like sit, down and shake!

If you’re interested in Toby, please complete an application HERE or email adoptions@adopthope.org.

Cat of the Week: Adriana

Julia D Cat of the Week

This sweet little girl is full of energy and loves to play.  She has the sweetest silent meow and starts purring as soon as you walk into the room.  She loves her humans and wants to be around her people and spend time cuddling with them.  Don’t be surprised when you wake up in the middle of the night and she is sound asleep next to you with her head on your pillow!  Adriana also loves her foster siblings and would probably do best in a home with other animal friends, another kitty in particular.

If you’re interested in Adriana, please complete an application HERE or email adoptions@adopthope.org.

Our Stories

Charlie’s Story

Charlie is a young puppy struggling to regain her health and a grim reminder of the need for owners to fully understand what a commitment it is to have a companion animal in their life. Charlie was admitted into emergency vet care by her owner, sick and unvaccinated at a mere 4 months old. Charlie was not provided with the most basic needs of a puppy; a rabies vaccination, distemper/parvo vaccines and heartworm preventative. She was deathly ill and in need of medical care. The owner, unable to pay for Charlie’s care wisely chose to surrender her with the hopes of her surviving and having a chance at a better life. Charlie was found to have not only a liver shunt but parvo, a highly contagious viral illness which left untreated has a very low survival rate in puppies. Charlie is undergoing treatment for parvo, finishing out her 30 days of near isolation. Once she has been cleared from this treatment she will receive surgery for the liver shunt. Life after surgery for Charlie will consist of an incredibly restricted diet, with expensive limited ingredient food and the hopes of finding a new home that will remain committed to her safety and care.
Charlie’s current medical expenses PRE-Surgery = $4,300. Surgery is an additional $1,000-$2,000 pending any complications that may arise.

Heaven’s Story

Heaven is a sweet southern belle that made her way to Iowa into Last Hope’s care after her owners in Texas abandoned her on their property when they moved away. This sweet female pittie was left tied out on a chain to fend for herself as they drove away, the chain embedded in her neck leaving a deep and painful scar. There’s no telling how long of a life this wonderful and sweet dog lived tied to a chain, despite this horrific background she is a people lover, ever trusting and friendly to all she meets. Heaven is also heartworm positive, a condition that affects the heart, lungs and surrounding blood vessels in a dog. She is undergoing treatment through Last Hope, the treatment is expensive and painful as the medicine works to kill the microfilaria that has invaded her body. Heaven had her first treatment this week, she remains at our adoption center under the watchful eye of our caring volunteers. They are working to keep her calm and comfortable, as she has a long road ahead of her to becoming the healthy dog we know she can be.

Heaven’s medical expenses so far top $1,000.

Gertrude’s Story

Gertrude was a meager 37 pounds when she came into Last Hope’s care, her rail thin body weak and her once shiny coat now dull, she was a skeleton of a Labrador/Vizsla mix. She was a stray found wandering on the roadside in need of a warm bed and more than a few good meals. Gertie, as she’s now known by her foster family, was seen at Frey Pet Hospital for an initial evaluation and found to have a large blood filled mass on the underside of her neck and many other small masses on her body that would require surgery. Gertie’s surgery revealed that the mass on her neck was a cancerous thyroid tumor, and the small masses on her body were sebaceous cysts and 4 mammary tumors. Our skilled vet partners were able to fully remove Gertie’s tumors and are hopeful that this brave little girl will make a full recovery and start gaining some much needed weight. We are optimistic that Gertie will receive a lifetime of love in a few great years!
Gertrude’s current medical expenses: $2,400

Sport’s Story

Sport came to Last Hope as an owner surrender. He was found as a stray in Benton County and lived with a woman as she worked to try to find his original owner. Unable to care for him any longer, Sport was surrendered to Last Hope in February 2017. Upon intake, we learned that Sport had a limp, his back leg devoid of any muscle and unable to support his full weight. An x-ray determined that Sport had been living for many years with a dislocated hip, his muscles atrophied creating painful bone-on-bone contact with every step. Surgery would stand to lessen his pain, although the damage to the joint from years of neglect would limit the options for repair. Surgery was scheduled March 6th, a femoral head osteotomy, or simply put, removing the ball at the top of the femur bone and creating a floating joint for Sport eliminated the pain he had felt for many years. Sport is recovering nicely in a foster home, his appetite is coming back and he’s slowly learning to put weight back on his leg.
Sport’s medical expenses = $2,400
