Cat of the Week: Mufasa

Julia D Cat of the Week

Hi, I am Mufasa. I am good looking mature male tabby cat. I enjoy bird watching and sun bathing from the perfect window seat. I get along okay with other cats but would do best with a kitty who is more submissive. I would do good with kids but I just need to get to know them. I am a cat that wants to be attached to one caretaker. I enjoy having my hair brushed and don’t mind a good head rub. I am currently living with my foster mom, but would love to go to a forever home! I am more on the reserved side but my foster mom says I’m becoming more affectionate and playful!

Dog of the Week: Kelby

Julia D Dog of the Week

Hi, I’m Kelby! I came to Last Hope with several other dogs and lived outside before I came here, but I found that living inside is so much nicer and I’m so smart that I learned right away what house manners are! I absolutely adore my foster mom and love to snuggle up with her on the couch and I get so excited when she comes home. It would be awesome if the people in my new family are home enough that I can bond with them sooner. I do great when I’m home alone – I’m a good girl! – but it will take me a long time to get adjusted if you’re gone a lot.  I could be the only dog or if properly introduced, I could be around male dogs; I live with a fun dog who’s a little bit bigger than me and though it took me a little while to adjust, I like him now.  I do okay with older cats who don’t try to run away from me, but if they run, I will chase them (sorry, the humans said something about me having some herding breed in me; I don’t know what that means). Since I am a little shy, I would prefer that kids in my forever home be at least ten years old and are able to respect my need for space. I can’t wait for my new family to find me!

Happy Tail: Howie

Julia D Happy Tails

Howie’s story starts with him being thrown out of a moving vehicle on the SE side of Cedar Rapids. Luckily a couple saved him and brought him to Last Hope. He had mange and terrible worms and was quite a sight. Howie had to have surgery on his rectum because of the worms and was treated for mange. He still gets weekly baths for the mange but, thanks to the work of Last Hope volunteers and generous contributions he has had a miraculous recovery.

Enter Megan! She saw Howie at the Adoption Center after a volunteer took him for a walk and it was love at first sight. Megan and her husband, Mike, have been fostering dogs for Last Hope for a few years and focus on fostering Pit Bulls. She says they are sometimes difficult to get adopted because of the unfair negative stigma associated with them so they need fosters that can potentially keep them longer than other dogs. Megan and Mike had lost their dog, Bentley in March of 2016 to a brain tumor. They still had a yellow Lab, Nala at home and were looking for another permanent dog but knew it would take time to find just the right one.

And then Megan saw Howie and she knew he was the dog. So Megan and Mike took in Howie and gave him a wonderful forever home. Howie adjusted very quickly to his new home and family. He’s still working on house training and they are looking forward to when he can be trusted to be out of his kennel while they are gone.

He has a bed that he loves and a basket full of toys that he loves to take out at night and play with. He’s very attached to Mike and loves to follow him around the house. In the future Mike would like to train Howie to go golfing with him!

Megan says Howie is a very affectionate dog and seems to really appreciate the home they have given him. His favorite time of the day is when they sit down for the night because he thinks he’s a lap dog!

Thank you, Megan and Mike for opening your home and hearts to Howie who had such a rough start. He found the perfect forever family.

Cat of the Week: Koen

Julia D Cat of the Week

Do you like cats that are cuddly and affectionate? If so, Koen is the perfect match for you! Koen is a handsome five year old black cat who is waiting to cuddle with you! This boy was rescued from a bad situation where he and the other animals were neglected but you would never guess that upon meeting him because he’s super sweet all the time. If you like lap cats, purr babies, a mature boy with the softest baby meow, and even a playful boy too, Koen would be good fit for you! He even gives hugs when you come into his room at the adoption center!

Volunteer of the Month: Shannon Studt

Julia D Volunteer of the Month

Shannon began volunteering for Last Hope in May 2015 while working on puppy mill issues in Iowa. She and her family began by fostering dogs and have had 11 fosters since then. She felt that fostering was something her family could do to save the lives of animals.

She also has transported dogs, helped with a variety of events, is a foster lead, and does home checks in her area for people who want to foster or adopt.

Shannon says she loves volunteering for Last Hope because she loves animals and wants to be a voice for the voiceless. About fostering, which can be difficult because it means saying goodbye to the animals when they find forever homes, she says this:

“I hear many times people say, ‘I could never foster because I would end up failing and wanting to keep them all,’ I answer them, it is hard to see a foster go, but it’s also very rewarding. I know that they are going to a great home that will care for them and love them as much as I do. I keep in touch with my adopters and they are always sending me pictures. I know if I can adopt a dog out to its forever home then Last Hope Animal Rescue can save another one for me to take in.”

Besides volunteering for Last Hope, Shannon also spends time educating people about puppy mills and the pet store connection. She also does TNR (trap, neuter, release) when she finds stray cats in her neighborhood.

Thank you, Shannon, for all you do for the animals through Last Hope and your advocacy for them!

Dog of the Week: Marcelle

Julia D Dog of the Week

Young, fit, family man (and by man I mean dog) in search of a forever home. I’m a recent transport to Iowa from Houston, Texas and I have found that the “Midwestern friendly” really fits me. Someone gave me up to a shelter long before Hurricane Harvey came through town. Once the storm passed, two kind ladies from Last Hope Animal Rescue took me and 12 of my buddies from the shelter so that we could have a better chance of being adopted and to make room for all the dogs that were getting away from the flooding. It was such a relief to get away from the shelter that I cuddled with the ladies up front the whole drive back to Iowa.

As you can probably tell from my lean physique, I am an active guy; I am at my best when I get a few long walks and play sessions a day. A yard is nice, but I really need walkies too. I do okay while my foster mom is away at work 8-5, but she comes home for lunch to take me on a short walk and ask me about my day. If you leave me alone, it would be best to leave me in a crate or a doggy proofed room because I’m still a pup after all. It makes me so happy to be around people and other dogs. I’m eager to please my people, and I never met a food I didn’t like, so I learned “sit” and “down” very quickly and have a lot of potential to learn other commands and tricks. If you adopt me, I would love to take a training class with you right away. I recently found out that not everyone wants to play all the time, so I will need your help to learn how to control my enthusiasm when someone doesn’t want to play (it’s a weird concept to me) or when I am around small children. I’m also still figuring out the difference between toys (can chew) and the things that I shouldn’t chew like shoes and cords — I don’t want to ruin anything important, but when my foster mom put her fluffy slippers right next to my toy, what did she think would happen?

Help Us Help the Animals

Julia D campaign

Eve, named for the night she was rushed into our care on Halloween Eve, was picked up after wandering around a neighborhood for days rail thin and starving. Neighbors had witnessed her seeking shelter under the stairs of an abandoned home, one family opened their doors and offered her shelter and a bowl of food. Upon getting her into their garage, they soon realized the extent of her needs and reached out to Last Hope for help.  We rushed Eve to Eastern Iowa Veterinary Specialty Center, hopeful we could do something for her. We learned that Eve was suffering from the end stages of renal failure, essentially her organs were starting to shut down.  Eve weighed a mere 21 pounds upon intake, a far cry from the typical weight of an adult Shar Pei (40-55 pounds).

It is our fear that Eve was dumped by an owner that learned she was sick and chose not to care for her.  She had likely wandered for some time, starving and cold.  Her eyes were nearly matted shut from entropion, an ulcer had formed on one eye blurring her vision.  The staff at EIVSC took amazing care of Eve, cleaning her eyes and face while pushing fluids and working to stabilize her.  Unfortunately, a mere 24 hours later on Halloween night, the difficult decision to let Eve go was made.  She was not passing urine and her body was accumulating waste, her vital signs were diminishing and she was starting to further shut down.  Eve died surrounded by new friends who held and comforted her, promising her that we would seek justice for Eve and someday meet her at the foot of the rainbow bridge.

So in Eve’s name, we ask you to please consider adoption and to support your local rescue groups.  If you see an animal that you fear is in need, please speak up sooner rather than later.  Every dog deserves a warm bed and a full bowl. A family to love them dearly, to care for them in the good moments and guide them through the not so good moments.  Adding a dog to your family is a forever choice, not an “until” choice. Please consider donating to Last Hope Animal Rescue today, your support is much appreciated. To make a donation please click HERE.

Cats of the Week: Bodie and Shimmer

Julia D Cat of the Week

Bodie has been a bit of a shy girl since being rescued … but don’t let that fool you!  This gorgeous Dilute Calico loves, Loves, LOVES to be petted, and will turn herself upside down and inside out while she enjoys your attention!  She will even lay her beautiful little head in your hand, too!!    She is super sweet and we truly believe when she gets into a home of her very own and learns to love and trust her new family, this little doll will be a lap kitty who thoroughly enjoys people!  She has started purring A LOT now that she’s gotten to know her foster mom better, too!  She is quite petite – hopefully she puts some weight on pretty soon as right now she is light as a feather!  Her fur is unbelievably soft, too – and the colors of her coat are just beautiful!  You do not find kitties wearing fur coats like hers very often… especially LONG HAIRS!  And did you see those stunning eyes she has?

Shimmer, who we believe is Bodie’s sister, has shown NO ’Tortie-tude’ at all toward her foster mom! She just wants loved on, petted, petted some more and loved on some more – and will give you tiny baby kisses, too!  Her fur is super soft and silky, and if you love running your fingers through soft kitty fur, she will be happy to let you!  She also purrs easily and often – and what better sound is there but the soothing purr from a content kitty?!  She does enjoy batting toys around – so there is a playful side to this little sweetheart, too!

Their foster mom is spoiling Bodie and Shimmer with canned food at night, and they sure have been enjoying that treat!  We only have an idea of what their former life must have been like, but their first mama must have shown them some love and affection because they aren’t afraid to accept it if it is offered!  We think they are about 2 1/2 years old as of July 2017, and they seem quite attached to each other.  They may do best adopted together… they snuggle and groom each other all the time; if they have been together their entire lives, which is probably the case, they would probably do much better adapting to their new home environment and family if they had each other to rely on.

Dog of the Week: Ollie

Julia D Dog of the Week

Ollie is a very special dog with a very sad background in search of a loving forever family. He was hit by a truck and left for dead on the side of the road, his spine was fractured from the blow.  Through the kindness of strangers, Ollie was rescued and received the medical attention he so desperately needed.  His spine has healed, although he walks with a limp, he is learning to run and play and just be a happy dog again!  Ollie is medically recovered and in need of a loving home that can offer him no stairs – those are still tricky! Ollie is also best suited for a home with older children as he can experience some sensitivity on his underside and wouldn’t want to scare a small child if he felt a little pain.

Ollie is in foster care and loves to run and play. His foster home has put him on some very inexpensive over the counter arthritis supplement for humans. He is responding remarkably. He will always have a little limp, which is pronounced when he is tired. He has taken it on himself to practice the three steps in the back yard to get a better vantage point to play, so a few steps with lots of patience would work out. He travels fine, but, does not like being picked up so a ramp would help him. He likes kids and everyone, and trips to Petco are great fun. He is very affectionate and gives kisses and head buts for attention. He is a little protective of his food and gets fed in his crate. He insists on 2 walks a day, just a few blocks, but, man does he love those walks. Bunnies beware here comes Ollie.

Cat of the Week: Luke

Julia D Cat of the Week

Luke was live trapped in a neighborhood where animal rescuers were looking for three abandoned kittens. We attempted to release him the next day, thinking he was someone’s pet, and he would not go. He just sat in the back of the kennel and cried. Searches for a potential owner were unsuccessful.  He has been a bit scared since being rescued which is understandable with what he’s been through lately, but we’re hoping this handsome boy will soon realize his new life has just begun! Won’t you give this sweet boy a chance to win your heart?

If you’re interested in Luke, please complete an application HERE or email adoptions@adopthope.org.
