Dog of the Week: Prudence Hope

Julia D Dog of the Week

Hi, my name is Prudence Hope, but you can call me Prue.  I am a very energetic, loving, playful girl who just wants to follow you around everywhere, people have jokingly called me “white shadow”.  I am a well-behaved girl, I would like to be the princess of the house. I don’t like cats (or small animals) at all, but I’ve done doggy daycare and had a blast!

I am fully house trained and can be trusted to be out during the workday. I know how to sit, lay, and shake, and love to cuddle.  If you are looking for a faithful companion to watch movies with and cuddle in bed with, then I am your girl!   I would do best with kids over 10 and I will need a fenced yard.

Pru’s adoption fee is $250 which includes spay surgery, being up to date on vaccinations and preventives, a microchip with lifetime registration, and a free obedience class.

If Prudence Hope sounds like the girl for you, please complete an adoption application HERE.

Happy Tail: Molly

Julia D Happy Tails

When Molly came to Last Hope she had a broken leg and the vet wasn’t sure if she would be able to keep the leg or if it would have to be amputated. Jody saw her picture on our website and knew instantly that Molly belonged with their family – with or without the leg. Luckily, they were able to save the leg. It took a couple of months for Molly to be treated and get healed up and be ready for adoption but during that time Molly’s foster mom kept Jody updated on Molly’s progress and let her visit her.

Keith and Molly

Jody’s husband, Keith, had said they would not get another dog – they already had Iggy, a cuddly yellow lab, in the home and two teenage boys, Louie and Wyatt. Well, Jody just knew Molly had to come into their home but kept it a secret until Molly had been cleared medically and was ready for adoption. Keith was not pleased at first but now when he comes in the door from work he greets “the ladies” with salutations and kisses.

Iggy and Molly have gotten along fine even though Iggy weighs about 80 pounds and Molly comes in at about 18 pounds! On Friday nights – yes, they somehow know when it’s Friday night – they get the zoomies together and race around the house until Molly runs under the coffee table and Iggy can’t reach her. Once Iggy loses interest, Molly comes out from under the table and the race is on again!

We’re so happy that Jody, Keith, Louie, and Wyatt opened their home to Molly and that she is doing so well. Jody says Molly runs the house and they just love her personality. Thank you for taking in Molly and giving her such a wonderful forever home!

Cat of the Week: Bobbee

Julia D Cat of the Week

Hello!  My name is Bobbee and my foster mom would like to tell you my story…

“I was talking with my sister the other day about Bobbee. She said Bobbee is a pot that needs a lid. Huh? She then explained. If your kitchen is like mine, getting a pot or pan out involves a bit of searching for the lid that fits that particular pot. Are you Bobbee’s lid?

Bobbee has a story that we only know the last year of. He is around 9 years old. Bob was found in a hoarder’s house, in a pitch-black basement with other animals, in a cage by himself with no litter box, but he did have food and water. He was stained yellow from urine and very scared. It took a couple of months to build some trust with him. As he gained weight and his yellow hair turned white we learned more about his personality.  Bobbee watched the family and he really wanted to play with them. They were in a large pen, so taking a leap of faith, I put him in the pen too. He was in heaven! I spent lots of time sitting in the pen and petting and playing with everyone. I learned that if Bob got stressed or excited he tended to bite. He couldn’t jump up on my lap at first but now spends his days in my bedroom and has no trouble jumping on the bed. He LOVES feathers and wand toys. He will roll on his back with his feet in the air like a kitten. He’s a lap cat and my TV buddy. Bobbee does not like to be picked up.

We made a trip to the vet and learned he has some arthritis and tender spots. He is on a joint supplement and a pain medication and both seem to help. He will revert to nipping when touched where it’s tender or he gets really excited and his new owner will have to understand it’s his way of communicating. He is a bobtail kitty, but to be honest, we are not sure if he was born that way or if someone ‘bobbed it’ for him; we wonder if someone tried to declaw some of his toes, too.  You will notice he is ear-tipped… he was NOT a feral cat, but when he was altered before LHAR was able to take him into our rescue, the vet doing his neuter thought he was a feral cat and ear-tipped him.  That’s just another part of this kitty’s journey through life. 🙁  If you look close at Bob you’ll see he has a snaggletooth look. Bob had a front tooth removed and it left him with his strange smile.  I think another cat for him to hang out with would be great if the other cat is laid back. I don’t know about dogs, he shows no fear when my two go up to his pen to say hi but that’s not a true test. I don’t think a home with young children would be a good fit.”

Bobbee’s adoption fee is $85 which includes neuter surgery, being up to date on vaccinations, and a microchip with lifetime registration.

If you think you might be Bobbee’s “lid,” please complete an application HERE.

Dog of the Week: Stevie

Julia D Dog of the Week

Hi, my name’s Stevie and I’m a puppy that needs to be shown the world! I love to play with toys and snuggle. I’m super smart, I know sit, shake, other paw, stay, lay down, kennel up, outside and off. I’m super eager to please my owner so if you want to continue training I will be the best boy, but I am still a puppy that needs to be reminded of what acceptable behavior is and do need a good amount of your time. My foster family has a lot of other dogs, they’re pretty cool!! and they have taught me a lot! I would love a forever home with a fenced yard to explore, someone who will take me to puppy training classes and teach me lots of new things as I grow! I would do best in a home with another dog! I’ve been good with every size of dog from Chihuahua to Great Dane. Cats are fine with me too.

Stevie’s adoption fee is $300 which includes neuter surgery, being up to date on vaccinations and preventives, a microchip with lifetime registration, and a free obedience class.

If this cutie seems like a good fit for your family, please complete an application HERE.

Dog of the Week: Dizzy

Julia D Dog of the Week

Dizzy is a sweet 11-year-old Shih Tzu/poodle mix that made her way from a shelter in Illinois to Iowa. Dizzy is very low key and independent. Her favorite spot is her soft pink bed. She would like a home where her people are home all day or at least aren’t gone too long. Being an older girl she needs more frequent potty breaks. She does fine with her foster dog siblings but is totally fine with being the only one. At her age dealing with young ones, two- or four-legged, is too much work so older kids and older or calm, laid back dogs would be best. Dizzy hasn’t been cat tested but as long as they are respectful of her, they should do fine.

Dizzy is crate trained and walks well on a leash but moves pretty slowly and likes to take her time. Her favorite time of day is breakfast and dinner and anything in between involving food! She will wiggle her little tail and looks like she is smiling because she is so excited. Dizzy does have food allergies but we were able to find both canned and dry food and treats that are inexpensive and won’t bother her. Other than that, she’s a healthy girl. If you are looking for an easy to love girl, Dizzy might be the one for you!

Dizzy’s adoption fee is $200 which includes spay surgery, being up to date on vaccinations and preventives, a microchip with lifetime registration, and a free obedience class.

If Dizzy sounds like a good fit for your family, please complete an application HERE.

Dog of the Week: Sully

Julia D Dog of the Week

Hi, my name is Sully, I am named after a famous brave leader. Yep, that’s me!  My foster home has found I behave much better if I am with a big dog.  And mom says I need to be treated like a big dog, and I behave better. If I think I am in charge I try to protect everyone around me with either peeing on it or biting it.  But here, Mom does not let me bark or misbehave and I relax right away.  She says I am too stinking cute and people are too nice to me, so I have learned to settle down, but, you know, I have to be me sometimes.

I have learned to bark and growl at new people to keep them at a distance until I am ready to meet them.  But, once I like you, I like to sleep in your bed and cuddle.  But since I am easily startled, small children are not my favorites (plus, I feel the need to correct them).  If you knew how the start of my life began, then you would understand why I feel the need to protect those I love, but I also need to learn to let the past go and live in the present.  So that’s where you come in, my perfect adopter, who will help me move forward in life and replace the bad memories with good ones. Due to Sully’s special needs, we are looking for an adopter in Iowa so that we can follow up with his care.  He will need an experienced adopter, as he is not a dog for a first-time dog owner.  He will need a fenced yard as well.

Sully’s adoption fee is $250 which includes neuter surgery, being up to date on vaccinations and preventives, a microchip with lifetime registration, and a free obedience class.

If you feel you might be the perfect family for Sully, please complete an adoption application HERE.

Volunteer of the Month: Tara McCormally

Julia D Volunteer of the Month

Tara began volunteering for Last Hope during the fall of 2018. She knew some people who had fostered and adopted through Last Hope and after attending an open house one evening, she inquired about volunteering.

Tara’s Daughter at an Open House

She really wanted to spend time with the dogs so she went through training and then started to pick up evening volunteer shifts with the dogs. Tara walked a dog in the St. Patrick’s Day parade, helped at Wag-O-Ween, assisted during open houses at the Center, helped with bath and microchip events at the Center, and she’s been helping out at adoption events as well.  In addition to all that, she also has picked up dogs at the Center and taken them to doggy daycare.

Tara’s Daughter and Her Pup-O-Gram Valentine, Sassy

Tara says, “I like getting dogs out and taking them to events.  Seeing how excited they get to be getting so much attention, it’s so sweet!”

Thank you, Tara, for all your help! The dogs really appreciate you getting them out and about.

We couldn’t do what we do without volunteers like Tara. If you’d like to learn more about volunteering at Last Hope, please email volunteer@adopthope.org. Or you can complete an adoption application HERE.

Happy Tail: Diesel

Julia D Happy Tails

Ashley was looking online for a dog to adopt and was impressed with how different Last Hope was from the other rescues and shelters. She saw Diesel’s face and fell in love instantly. But it was his bio that really convinced her Diesel was the dog for their family. At the time, Diesel was going through some medical issues so they did a foster-to-adopt arrangement. But Ashley says he was *their* dog from day one.

In the beginning, Diesel was a little shy but he quickly came out of his shell once he moved in with Ashley, Seth, and their dog, Gypsy. He now likes to meet new people and loves being the center of attention. He helped Gypsy become a more confident dog, too. Gypsy used to not be interested in jumping up on furniture, walking on wood floors, or playing with toys. But once Diesel came into the family, he helped Gypsy become more confident and strong-willed.

He loves going for walks, playing ball, playing with his sister in the backyard, and playing with his many, many toys – especially going after the ones with squeakers in them! He loves dressing up in sweaters, hoodies, and coats but most of all he loves cuddling with his mom and dad.

About Diesel, Ashley says, “Diesel has changed my life completely, I could not imagine my life without him. He is the sweetest boy full of energy and love. I am grateful that he had so much love and support from Last Hope and that we were blessed with the opportunity to adopt him. This is his forever home!”

It sounds like Diesel landed in the perfect place. Thank you Ashley, Seth, and Gypsy for opening your hearts and home to Diesel!

Dog of the Week: Alvin

Julia D Dog of the Week

My name is Alvin. I may look tough, but I am a really sweet boy. If you are looking for a buddy to snuggle on the couch with, I am your guy. I also like to play with squeaky toys and soccer balls. I came from Arkansas where I had a rough start and I sometimes am selective of my dog friends. After a proper introduction with new dogs though I love to play with them.
Not to brag, but I am really smart! I have completed obedience 1 class. I am very food motivated, so if you want to teach me even more it won’t be hard. I am also kennel trained and have learned how to walk with a gentle leader so I don’t pull so much. I do not like cats and would like to have kids over 12 since I can play a little rough. I wouldn’t mind being the only dog so I can get lots of love and attention, but I would also be happy with another doggy friend as long as we are a good fit.
Alvin’s adoption fee is $250 which includes neuter surgery, being up to date on vaccinations and preventives, a microchip with lifetime registration, and a free obedience class.
If you think this great guy might be a good fit for your home, please complete an application HERE.
