Cheryl began volunteering for Last Hope in January of 2017 and has been an asset to our organization ever since. She had been fostering dogs for a different organization when they changed to a shelter-based setup. A person she knew referred her to Last Hope. Cheryl began by transporting and handling dogs at events as well as running 
miscellaneous errands as needed. Eventually, she got back into fostering dogs and currently houses one or two fosters at a time. She also spreads the word about Last Hope events and fundraisers.
When asked why she likes volunteering for Last Hope she said, “It’s all about the dogs! It’s very fulfilling to be able to help out an animal in need. Also, I love being part of something bigger than myself.” Cheryl wishes she could save them all.

Ahoy, there mateys! My name is Pirate, and I have the eye patch to prove it! I am available for adoption through Last Hope and I am so excited. They say I’m a mix of breeds, but I tell you – I am 100% love, cuddles, and kisses! I love my people, and I’d do anything to learn how to make you happy. I’m smart and housebroken, and I know how to sit! There is some confusion about my past, though. When Last Hope got me, they were told that I was 9 years old and had lived outside on a chain my whole life – but no one who’s met me believes I’m 9. I’m maybe more like 6? And I was on a chain for a long time, that’s true – but I’m also housebroken, and I love to snuggle on the couch. I’m very good in my crate, too.
While I was tied outside I didn’t have a very good life – I was shot by a mean person, and I was attacked by mean dogs, too. I’m kind of scared of dogs now, and so I can be a little defensive. So while I live right now with other dogs and cats, I can be protective of my food and my toys, and I like to be the center of attention when I’m cuddling. I’d love to be the only dog, but I could live with non-curious cats and submissive dogs. My foster mom has promised me that I never have to live outside again, and I am so glad because inside I am warm and dry. I have so much love to give, and I am such a good boy-can you find room in your heart for me?

Connie had adopted a cat, Sebastian, from the Iowa City shelter in January but felt he needed more than just her to interact with. She found Armani on our site and fell in love.
As we always recommend, she kept the two cats separate in the home for several days, exchanging blankets and toys between the two. Finally, she placed a baby gate between the two rooms. Armani was relaxed about the meeting but Sebastian gave a hiss and low growl at first. After 
a day of being separated by the gate, Connie removed it and Armani was a little tentative at first but carefully explored the house. The two cats smelled each other and have been best friends ever since! After a couple days, Connie found Sebastian grooming Armani on top of the dresser.
Armani started out a little skittish around people but has warmed up 
and now lets Connie’s grandkids pet and pick him up. Armani loves to play and chase balls around the house. Both cats love to sit on the windowsills and watch the world go by. Getting some fresh air by the patio door is also a favorite activity.
Connie took the time to introduce Sebastian and Armani and her efforts paid off with a smooth transition that was stress-free for everyone. She loves both cats she adopted this year and couldn’t imagine life without them.

Meet Owen! Owen is the perfect cat for just about any home. He is quiet and a relaxed cat. He loves his cat tower to curl up in as well as anyone’s lap. Owen also likes the windowsill on a sunny day. Owen loves to sleep but will wake up once you start to pet him, and oh, his purrs are so cute! Owen would do well in a 
home with other cats, although he may not bother with them much.

Meet Ava! Ava is young at heart. She loves any attention you give her. She may need a little warming up to you, but once she gets to know you, she will not leave your side. Ava does not care too much for sitting still because she loves any adventure she can find. Ava would prefer a home with other cats because she likes to play so much. Ava will hug you around the neck when you pick her up. Anyone who meets her thinks she is the sweetest girl.

If you’re looking for a kitty with attitude you’ve come to the right place. Moose is a spunky boy who will tell you exactly how he feels about anything and everything. He enjoys an occasional pet but will let you know when he’s done and wants his space back. He can not go to a home with young kids and he’s kind of a bully with other cats and dogs. He can go to a home with other pets but you’ll need to make sure you take it slow with introductions and that your dog doesn’t mind a smack in the face once in a while. Honestly, you’ll probably need to be ok with a smack once in a while too. It takes two people to trim his nails and you’ll want to keep his nails trimmed.
Moose has improved a lot since he first came to us. He’s been through a lot – he was always an indoor kitty and we believe the kids in the home were not taught how to interact with him properly. And therefore, he didn’t really learn how to interact with people properly. He’s learning but it’s a slow process. But if you’re up for a challenge he has great potential to someday be an amazing companion.

Do you like friendly, outgoing boys? If so, then you should come to meet Buddy! Buddy is just 4 years old and excitedly waiting for his furr-ever home. This boy is right there at the door waiting to say hello when you enter his room. He loves to be the center of attention and will be there right by your side to talk to you. But as soon as you throw a toy, he’s racing across the room to snatch it up!
Buddy will make a great lap kitty, a cuddler, and the best feline companion for you! He’s even an explorer, often an escape artist (out of his room), and a playful boy too! He gets along great with the other kitties in his room. Buddy is purr-fect, all he’s missing is you!

Barb began her journey into cat rescue in 2009. She didn’t know anything about trapping and rescuing cats but she jumped right in when she learned about cats being killed in a feral colony. She says, “Learning how to set traps was challenging and getting cats out of the traps once caught was even more so, as I didn’t know how to open the trap to get them out… but I learned very quickly, and rescuing feral kittens and doing TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) started my love of rescuing!”
She began fostering for Last Hope in January of 2017 (pictured are four of her current fosters). Barb is now the cat lead in the Waterloo/Cedar Falls area and they have foster homes taking care of about 60 cats and 7 rabbits. She tries to be very supportive of the foster homes because many of them are new to rescue. Barb makes an effort to accompany the fosters to vet visits and has a “pharmacy” in her home for cats that need medication. She also administers shots for vaccinations when kittens or some adult cats come into the rescue. Because most of her fosters have full-time jobs, Barb also helps out with transports down to IHA in Cedar Rapids.
Barb also helps by entering data into our computer program that tracks our animals, writing biographies for the cats, photographs the cats, processes applications, performs home visits (sometimes as far away as Iowa City), and attends every adoption event in the Waterloo area. She’s one busy person!
“I love to help market Last Hope in this area, too! On the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month, you can hear me on 93.5TheMix radio station on their ‘Wet Nose Wednesday’ segments, which are broadcast 3 times a day. I also make a poster about my subject of the day and it is placed on the 93.5TheMix FB page.”
About volunteering for Last Hope Barb says, “I LOVE volunteering for Last Hope! Of the 3 rescues I have volunteered for in 10 years, they are without a doubt the most organized, professional, hardworking and dedicated volunteers I have been associated with! Many of them really inspire me – especially those who are younger and have kids and jobs – yet they take time out of their busy lives to foster and clean the Adoption Center and socialize the cats and dogs residing there!”
We were able to expand into the Waterloo/Cedar Falls area with Barb’s help and dedication. Thank you for being such an important part of Last Hope and our mission to help homeless animals!
Addison is an 8-year-old female boxer/ pitbull mix. She is housebroken and is good on a leash. She is good with children and everyone she meets. She needs to be the only princess in the home. We are unsure about cats. She loves to be spoiled. She would love to find a forever home where she can snuggle up with someone on the couch. She also loves to go on 
car rides and go on walks around the neighborhood.
