Hi, my name is Pearl. I am a gray ten year old lady. My previous owner passed away and I was left without anyone to care for me. This was sad for me, but Last Hope has given me a place to stay while I wait for another home. I have done really well adapting to my new surroundings and all the other kitties I live with. I enjoy lounging on a blanket and watching the kittens play. I am independent and take good care of myself, and I really enjoy companionship and having someone to hold and pet me. If you are looking for a cat that will require minimal effort to care for but give you lots of love and joy, I am for you! I am spayed, up to date on vaccines, and micro chipped. My adoption donation is only $25.

I love to cuddle and can be a lap dog if you let me! I was heartworm positive when I came to Iowa but I am almost finished with my recovery time and can’t wait to go to my forever home!  All of our pets need to be kept as indoor pets and we do require a home visit as part of the adoption process. The adoption fee includes: spay/neuter, microchip and vaccinations.

Cat of the Week: Annie

Julia D Cat of the Week

Annie came to us with 26 other cats and kittens. She was days away from giving birth to her own litter. Unfortunately,  with that many cats coming in from one home, we ran out of foster homes quickly and Annie gave birth to her 4 kittens at our newly opened Adoption Center. Fortunately we were able to find another rescue to take in Annie and her kittens where she was able to raise them in an environment more conducive to raising a family.
As Annie’s kittens reached adoption age they all found homes of their own. Meanwhile Annie waited at Kitty City for her new family. Recently Kitty City lost their building and had to relocate many of their cats. Annie made her way back to Last Hope and into a foster home.

Annie is a sweet cat. Likes to play with toys and doesn’t really mind dogs or other cats. Give her a couple weeks to get to know you and you have a friend for life! If you’d like more information about Annie, please email or complete an application HERE.

Dog of the Week: Casanova

Julia D Dog of the Week

Casanova is certainly a lover. He is a 40 lb lap dog that does not take “no” for an answer when it comes to affection. He is not above begging for head scratching, belly rubbing or face kissing. He absolutely loves people and wants to be with them. He plays well with female and submissive males but he is so needy for attention that he will go after a another male dog that he thinks is more bossy than he is. He is a jealous young man and not afraid to show it. We suggest he goes to a home with no other male dogs, big or small.

His potty training is about 90 percent and he is trying very hard. He is kennel trained and sits in it quietly when he has to be left home. He likes to have a chew toy in with him to keep him busy. He loves treats, but wants human interaction even more. He is good with kids and not food aggressive or toy aggressive with kids. He lives with cats and has not done anything more than chase them a bit. He is a bit over curious about them so he is not left unattended with cats for his safety and theirs. Make no mistake about this boy, he is a bed cuddler, a couch cuddler and a lap dog. Plan on watching TV through his head if you try to ignore him.

Casanova 2

He is pretty high energy during playtime and he will keep kids or an active adult busy. He takes a few days to settle in but once he does, he is good about sleeping at night and just being content and hanging out with the family. All of our pets need to be kept as indoor pets and we do require a home visit as part of the adoption process. Landlord (if applicable), vet and personal references will be called.  The adoption fee includes: spay/neuter, microchip and vaccinations.

Happy Tail: River

Julia D Happy Tails

“Hi. My name is River. You may remember me as the big, bossy guy at the Center where I had been since they moved to the building on 16th Ave. My people now are Dan and Penny. They used to have a dog but not for five years. When they decided life was too stressful without a furry friend, Penny did a search on the web for dogs to adopt in this area. There were a lot to choose from but she liked me best! My bio online said I was extra-large and liked to snuggle, which won her over. A friend of hers recommended Last Hope because his wife is familiar with the great people there. Penny started to fill out the adoption form and chickened out. It was almost two weeks before she contacted the Center to see if I would be at an adoption event. Since I don’t like crowds I never went to those events so they met other dogs at the event then came to the Center to meet me without others to distract us.
I liked Dan the first thing when I saw him and gave him a big kiss. Penny was okay as long as she didn’t bother me when I was playing with Dan. (I might have growled at her a couple of times.) While they talked with Cathy, I plopped down and stared at my reflection in the glass door. I was sad when Dan left. Two days later when Cathy took me to their house I knew I had to be nice to Penny, too, because I wanted to stay there. I haven’t growled at her since, but I do give her the stink eye sometimes when she interrupts Dan petting me. She feeds me and gives me lots of snuggles and yummy treats so I like her almost as much as Dan.
The first few days I went to their office in town with them. But I didn’t like when people bothered Penny or Dan so I growled at them and they were afraid (as they were supposed to be). The three of us went to a trainer and he thinks I’m frightened (shhh, don’t tell anyone this big guy is afraid). So now I stay home in my crate while they are at the office. I get some good naps in and my crate faces a mirror so I can look at myself. But the best part is when they come home every day. I get to go patrol the yard and eat and then snuggle with them. Some days I even get to go back to town with them in the truck!
We had company for a couple of days. I wasn’t very nice to the company but I was afraid they were going to make me go back to the Center. The Center is a nice place, but I like having my own room and no “meows” around. I do have to chase the squirrels and the deer away. It’s my yard now and I’m not going to share! I know it bother Penny and Dan when I growl at other people, but it’s going to take a while. They work with me a lot to help me focus on things I like so I don’t get so upset, but sometimes it’s just too much for me. When no one else is around I am very relaxed and love my new home. I’m pretty sure they like me, too!”
*Thanks to Penny for writing this for River!

Cat of the Week: Bell

Julia D Cat of the Week

Bell is a spunky little girl with big attitude! She’s a lover and she’s not afraid of anything. She joined the 3 cats and 2 dogs in her foster home, walking right in like she ran the place. She’s even taken to the kids in the home like they’re old friends. She’s very curious and loves to explore. She likes to attend our adoption events on a harness and leash, forget about a kennel for this girl – even with all those big dogs running around the pet store, she doesn’t let that phase her!

If you’re interested in sharing your home with this girl (be warned – she may take over!) you can email or complete an application HERE.

Dog of the Week: Fuzz

Julia D Dog of the Week

Fuzz 2

I’m Fuzz and I’m a Husky mix. I am already neutered, house trained, a special needs pet, up to date with shots, good with kids, and good with dogs. Fuzz’s Story… Fuzz had surgery in March on a deformed front leg which was successful. He will have some soreness in that leg for awhile and especially after being very active. He needs a full year to recover the strength in that leg so he is considered a special needs dog.  He does love to run after a rolling frisbee and chase his foster canine brothers and sisters.  His energy comes in spurts and he tends to want to rest for a few minutes after running and playing.  He likes short walks and likes to find places along the way to lay in the shade and observe the world.  I would not consider him a good running or biking companion at this time.  Note:  It would be preferable for daily walks to be on grassy areas since he drags his leg a bit and the inner two nails get ground down to the quick. He can be a little stubborn at times so a family who has the patience to train a sometimes stubborn pup will be required as well as a fenced yard.

He knows the basic sit, down, touch and focus commands.  He is housetrained as long as you remember to let him out frequently and he is comfortable in the family.  If he is not let out regularly he may have some “excited” peeing – this is not on purpose, just accidental.  He has gotten much better at waiting until he is let out! He likes to play in the kiddie pool and bite the water.  I have had him de-shedded by a groomer in the spring and he has not shed very much after that, so once a year to remove his winter coat may be enough. Fuzz is looking for an active, loving, forever family to love.  He would also like to be with another active pup so he could have a chasing/wrestling partner.

If you would like more information about Fuzz, please email or complete an application HERE.
