Cat of the Week: Harry

Julia D Cat of the Week

Hi guys! My name is Harry, I am 2 years old, and I am looking for my forever home. The volunteers that take care of me say I’m hard on the outside but I’m really a big softy. It takes me a little bit to warm up to new places and people, but if you have treats that will make it better.

Harry’s adoption fee is $85 and includes neuter surgery, being up to date on vaccinations and preventives, and a microchip with free lifetime registration.

If you think you could give Harry a happy home, please complete an adoption application HERE.

Dogs of the Week: Chico and Cisco

Julia D Dog of the Week

Meet Chico and Cisco! These bonded brothers are looking for a home together, so if you are ready for double the love and cuddles, these are the pups for you! They are both around 4 years old and believed to be dachshund/chihuahua mixes. Chico (black and tan) and Cisco (tan) love attention! They haven’t been around many children yet, but we are certain they would do just fine in a home with dog savvy children, especially if they wanted to be their cuddle buddies at night!

Both boys need to be kept on a low-fat diet, they would each benefit from losing a little weight and while they aren’t necessarily built for long walks they will enjoy shorter walks with you!  The boys also do well kenneling together, so while they enjoy being with people the most, they will tolerate you being gone for a standard workday (up to 8 hours). Chico and Cisco have lived with other small dogs and did great.  They have not met any cats yet, we’re guessing they may bark at a cat initially but could warm up nicely. A fenced-in yard is required, although they walk well on a leash together they will do best with a safe and enclosed yard to explore and burn off extra energy.

The adoption fee for the pair is $450 and includes neuter surgery, being up to date on vaccinations and preventives, a microchip with free lifetime registration, and a free obedience class.

If you think this adorable pair would fit into your home and family, please complete an adoption application HERE.

Volunteer of the Month: Katy Hackett

Julia D Volunteer of the Month

Katy has been volunteering for Last Hope for more than two years in the Waterloo/Cedar Falls area. She started volunteering when she saw a plea to help some kittens that had crawled up into a car engine and been discovered there – thankfully before anything bad happened to them. She agreed to foster the four kittens for Last Hope and her journey began! Two of the kittens really needed socializing and Katy and her family worked together to get them ready to live in a home setting. Her family was sad, but also very happy when those two kittens were adopted into the same home. It’s always a bittersweet time when fosters go to their forever homes. The other two kittens, Katy ended up adopting.

The work Katy does for Last Hope includes fostering (she especially likes the “tough cases” – cats that are a little wild and in need of socializing), processing applications, and cleaning at the Waterloo PetSmart where we have some adoptable cats, advocating for Last Hope by talking to people about our mission and what we do. She also stepped up to the plate and helped coordinate transports of animals when the usual coordinator needed assistance due to an injury.

Katy advises, “If you’ve ever thought about fostering, give it a chance.  It’ll be one of the most rewarding things you do!  If you have kiddos, it is a great way to show them responsibility, compassion, teamwork, and cooperation toward a common goal.  If you can’t foster, there are so many other ways you can be involved: Cleaning at PetSmart or the adoption center, processing applications, assisting at adoption events, helping to socialize the animals, etc.  If you volunteer, we can always find a way to use your talents!”

A hearty “Thank You” to Katy and her family for helping us fulfill our mission of helping homeless animals. It takes people like Katy on our team to get the work done!

Cat of the Week: Beatrice

Julia D Cat of the Week

Introducing… BEATRICE!  This gorgeous Patched Tabby and White female is estimated to be about 1 ½ years old as of November 2020.  She and her four kittens were rescued from a barn; the kittens were just a few weeks old and although she was a bit shy, she was a terrific mama and soon learned to trust her rescuer.  After moving into a foster home environment with two of her kittens  ~ having furniture to lay on, food and water available at all times, lots of toys and constant interactions with humans  ~ really helped her adjust to an indoor home life!   Her kittens were adopted together recently, and  Beatrice is really blossoming and becoming independent and can easily self-entertain with toys! When she feels comfortable, she enjoys interactions with people and being in the family. She is the first greeter in the morning and is eager for a nice morning petting. She loves windows and watching everything outside.  When everyone is relaxing, she wants to be in the same room and sometimes decides a lap is the best place, when available.    She would be fine as the only cat, but we have found she does enjoy another cat also. Beatrice was very respectful of our foster’s resident cats and they became best pals – playing together and sleeping together or nearby.  She also was very good with grandchildren.  She loves chaser toys – probably her favorite – and she would follow a 5 year old all over the house when he had the chaser feather toy.   With her background, she is shy at first, but it doesn’t take her too long to adjust. Once she realizes she is in a safe place her personality really starts to blossom.  She is a fun and sweet girl to have around, and will bring joy into your home!

Beatrice’s adoption fee is $85 and includes spay surgery, being up to date on vaccinations and preventives, and a microchip with free lifetime registration.

If you would like to give Beatrice the great home she deserves, please complete an adoption application HERE.

Dog of the Week: Little Bit

Julia D Dog of the Week

Yes, my name is really Little Bit.  It’s like being called John Boy even after I grew up.  The one thing wonderful about getting adopted is you can change that….Please change my name! I love to run in the yard and I’m pretty fast.  I like jumping up into your lap and cuddling or just sitting on the couch next to you.   I’d let you pet me, too.  I like going for walks but could use some training because I don’t get to do that a lot.  I am housetrained and let you know when I need to go out.   I know what “off” means if you don’t want me on your bed or other furniture.  I like treats, too. I like dogs but sometimes go overboard so would be best as an only dog in your house.  I have enough love to keep you happy!  I start out shy with new people but if they give me time, treats, or loving pets, I come around.  I’m not sure if I would be good with small children as I haven’t been around them lately and don’t remember if I did in the past. I do have a touch of arthritis in my front legs, but that is to be expected given my age. I’m about eight years old. I may not be a running companion, but I’ll happily zoom around our fenced in back yard!

Little Bit’s adoption fee is $250 and includes neuter surgery, being up to date on vaccinations and preventives, a microchip with free lifetime registration, and a free obedience class.

If you think Little Bit would be a good buddy for you, please complete an adoption application HERE.

Happy Tail: Sven (FKA Swisher)

Julia D Happy Tails

Anthony and Cassidy adopted Sven (formerly Swisher) and he has settled in nicely to his home. Here is what Cassidy had to say:

“We adopted our bunny, Sven (previously known as Swisher), around two years ago. It seems crazy to think that it’s been that long already! He is a little stinker, but we love how much he has further developed his personality and that he has grown fond of interacting with us. Although it definitely took a while to get to where we are today, the patience that we showed him seems to have paid off big time.
Though he still isn’t a huge fan of being held, he has come to love getting attention. He loves treats, sunflower seeds (in his food mix), and to gnaw on things. He’s got tons of room to run around, which is good because at approximately the same time each day, he starts sprinting around and jumping like he has been saving up his energy all day specifically for that purpose. I suppose it makes sense since he sleeps under the same chair for a couple of hours every day. He claimed that specific chair very early on, so (even though we no longer need the dining room table) we kept the chairs. We love him, and all his adorable little quirks.”
Sometimes it takes a little time and patience for pets to come out of their shells and show their true personalities. We’re very grateful that Anthony and Cassidy took the time and effort to help Sven be the best bunny he can be!

Dog of the Week: Diesel

Julia D Dog of the Week

Hubba, hubba…check out Diesel! This handsome young guy, believed to be around 3 years old, is on the prowl for a new home.  Diesel is a smart and loving dog, he loves to be around people so an owner with a flexible schedule will be a great fit for him! Diesel is not a fit with cats or smaller dogs, he loves to play and has wonderful young dog energy that they wouldn’t appreciate.  He will be best suited with a female dog that is non-dominant and around his size, or as an only dog with a dog savvy dog owner.  Diesel will be a star pupil in the FREE obedience class included in his adoption fee! Diesel is friendly with all people, although he ultimately wants a home with older kids who will play with him and help to burn off some of his energy! Diesel may be best suited to a home with a secure and physically fenced in yard as he can get very amped up at other dogs or animals passing by him.

Diesel’s adoption fee is $250 and includes neuter surgery, being up to date on vaccinations and preventives, a microchip with free lifetime registration, and a free obedience class.

Dog of the Week: Addison

Julia D Dog of the Week

Hello, Addison here! I am a laidback boxer/pitbull mix looking for a home to call my own! I am about 9 years old and know all my basic commands. I love everyone that I meet, but I do need to be the only princess in your home (no other animals please!). I am good with children of all ages. I am looking for an experienced owner who can handle me when I am around other animals. My foster mom tells me that I learn quickly. With training and time, I have learned to have positive interactions with my fur neighbors. I am looking for a forever home that will give me lots of snuggles and take me on car rides and walks. I am leash and muzzle trained, and ready to find my forever home!

Addison’s adoption fee is $250 and includes spay surgery, being up to date on vaccinations and preventives, a microchip with free lifetime registration, and a free obedience class.

If you’d like to give Addison a soft place to land, please complete an adoption application HERE.
