Volunteer of the Month: Sue Bennett

Julia D Volunteer of the Month

Sue Bennett has been volunteering for Last Hope for more than five years. She began by fostering dogs and now fosters cats and helps clean the cat area at the Adoption Center. She also does transports from time to time. Her cat fosters include FeLV-positive cats and neo-natal kittens. Caring for very young kittens involves losing a lot of sleep because they need to be fed regularly around the clock.

“I love fostering for Last Hope!  I love the team atmosphere and the wealth of knowledge that members of our rescue have.  I’m proud of Last Hope because we don’t hesitate to take animals that might be difficult to adopt or animals that have behavioral or medical issues.  We have so many wonderful volunteers for the Kitty Crew and everyone pitches in to make sure that everything gets done.”

Sometimes people say they could never foster animals because it would be too sad to let them go. Here is what Sue has to say about that:

“I’m not gonna lie — it’s hard sometimes.  It can be messy and hectic.   It takes time and focus, and it can break your heart.  When animals come in they can be challenging – due to illness or human cruelty, sometimes they don’t trust us or like us very much.  And you throw all the love you have (and then some) toward getting them to trust you and love humans again – and when you’ve succeeded, and they are healthy and whole, they get adopted and you start all over with a new one. And those feelings are real, but in the end – even the bad days are worth it.  Honestly, all of the difficulties pale in comparison to the absolute joy of rescue.  Seeing a kitten you bottle-fed (and worried over and lost sleep over) running around, jumping, and playing.  Seeing a dog that has been abused wag his tail for the first time.  Seeing an adoptor’s face when you bring them their new pet.  Seeing a sick cat’s eyes brighten – seeing them getting stronger.  And knowing that you helped.  Knowing that you 100% made a difference.”

Volunteering at a rescue isn’t for everyone, but we’re very thankful that Sue has decided it’s for her because she is a great addition to our team!

Cat of the Week: Carley

Carley’s adoption fee is $85 and includes spay surgery, being up to date on vaccinations and preventives, and a microchip with free lifetime registration.

Dog of the Week: Simon

Julia D Dog of the Week

Simon is a young male, around 3-4 years old and believed to be a lab-shepherd mix.  He lives in a foster home with two other dogs, and makes a great doggy companion to dogs of all sizes! Simon is playful and fun, but may be best suited with dogs and people who appreciate this kind of energy – he might be too much energy for a young person who could easily get knocked down by his exuberant play style.  Simon loves to run around in a fenced-in backyard, so this is a must in his forever home.  He also needs a patient owner who will be diligent about working on general commands (like reminding him not to have his paws up on people or countertops!).  Simon is mostly kennel trained, he just needs a little reassurance (and a treat!) and he kennels up easily.  Potty training has been a breeze in his foster home, Simon is a fast learner! Simon also loves to go for walks, and he walks pretty well on a leash…until he sees another dog that he wants to greet, and then you need to be sure and hang on! Simon has only briefly met cats, he was pretty timid of them so we think he’ll be okay with a dog-savvy cat (as long as he has a canine companion).

Simon’s adoption fee is $250 and includes neuter surgery, being up to date on vaccinations and preventives, a microchip with free lifetime registration, and free obedience class.

Happy Tail: Summit (formerly Dancer)

Julia D Happy Tails

Tommi and her family were ready to add a four-legged member to their family and they turned to Last Hope. Here is their story in their own words:

Many of our Facebook friends foster and volunteer with Last Hope, so when we were ready to add a new dog to the family we started the process of finding the perfect fit.

All of the volunteers at Last Hope were fantastic to work with and made the adoption process easy to navigate.
We saw on Petfinder that there had been a litter born in the shelter to a dog named “Bobo.” We met a few of the pups and connected immediately with a bouncy little guy named “Dancer.” He and all of his littermates were the “reindeer babies.”

Dancer is now Summit Bernard and has been such a wonderful addition to our family. He is smart, attentive, and eager to please. He is full of personality and puppy antics. He is great with our 7-year-old daughter, Olivia, and loves his feline pack members (maybe a bit more than they love him). His favorite activities include chewing on sticks, letting the cats groom him, playing frisbee, and flopping over on his back for belly rubs.

We’re so glad that they had a positive experience adopting through Last Hope and that Summit has found an amazing forever home!

Cat of the Week: Jerry aka Skit

Julia D Cat of the Week

Jerry had been a neighborhood cat of one of our fosters until he started looking a little rough.  Last Hope agreed to take him in and he’s now officially an office kitty.   You would think that he would be shy, but Jerry craves and LOVES attention from his office mates.  He loves being held like a baby, he wants to be near humans at all times.  He demands their time and attention.  Jerry needs an experienced cat person to adopt him, someone who really understands cats, especially those that have been alone for some time.   He wants someone that will be home the majority of the day.   He would love to curl up in your arms and take a long cat nap while you watch your favorite tv program.  It doesn’t really matter what you’re doing, Jerry is going to want to be there! Jerry would do best in a home without young children or other animals.  He’s got more than enough love to offer to anyone willing to take a chance on him!

Jerry’s adoption fee is $85 and includes neuter surgery, being up to date on vaccinations and preventives, and a microchip with free lifetime registration.

Dog of the Week: Diamond

Julia D Dog of the Week

Diamond is a girl’s (or boy’s) best friend! Diamond is a 5.5-year-old spayed female boxer, and once she finds her person she will stick to them like velcro!  Diamond LOVES attention and is not great at sharing it, so dog matches for her can be dependent on the other dog’s willingness to share.  We have seen her do best with smaller, mature dogs who tend to ignore her.  She is not a fit with cats. Diamond is also great with children, although she does need to learn house manners still (like not countertop cruising or stealing food)! Diamond absolutely requires a physical 6-foot fence in her forever home.  She is not an overly confident dog especially when she is outdoors or in new environments and has a history that includes jumping fences and running away. Diamond was also heartworm positive when she joined the rescue. She has been through treatment but requires an owner who understands the importance of keeping her on preventives year-round for the rest of her life.

Her adoption fee is $250 and includes spay surgery, being up to date on vaccinations and preventives, a microchip with free lifetime registration, and a free obedience class.

If this sweetie looks like a fit for you, please complete an adoption application HERE.

Cat of the Week: Ruthie

Julia D Cat of the Week

Ruthie is a little shy but when she starts to trust you she is friendly and very sweet. Ruthie is almost all black with a little white stripe on her ear. She’s about three years old and ready for a home she can call her own.

Ruthie’s adoption fee is $85 and includes spay surgery, being up to date on vaccinations and preventives, and a microchip with free lifetime registration.

Dog of the Week: Zoey

Julia D Dog of the Week

Zoey is an active 9-year-old Jack Russell/Rat terrier mix girl that is looking for a home to call her own. She absolutely loves to play ball, but she makes a good nap partner, too. Zoey would love a fenced-in yard where she can run around in.  Zoey is good with other dogs, cats and kids. She does best with respectful animals who give her space, or aren’t up in her face constantly. She does let you know when she needs to go outside or when you need to feed her.

Her adoption fee is $250 and includes spay surgery, being up to date on vaccinations and preventives, a microchip with free lifetime registration, and a free obedience class.
